At least 17 pupils have been confirmed dead following a fire outbreak in one of the dormitories at Hillside Endarasha Academy in Kieni West, Nyeri County.

Confirming the tragedy, National Police Service Spokesperson Dr Resilia Onyango said 14 other pupils with serious burns have been rushed to hospital.

The deceased students were burnt beyond recognition in the Thursday night inferno.

The cause of the fire is yet to be established.

Meanwhile, a team of police officers led by Deputy Director of CID John Onyango and Director of Homicide Martin Nyuguto has been deployed to the school to commence investigations into the incident.

At the same time, President William Ruto, his deputy Rigathi Gachagua and opposition leader Raila Odinga have sent messages of condolences to the families who lost their loved ones in the fire incident at Hillside Endarasha Academy in Nyeri that claimed at least 17 lives.

In his message, President Ruto promised swift action and urged relevant authorities to investigate the incident to bring those responsible to book.

“Our thoughts are with the families of the children who have lost their lives in the fire tragedy at the Hillside Endarasha Academy in Nyeri County. This is devastating news. We pray for speedy recovery to the survivors,” the president said.
