The Judiciary has directed that all Judiciary flags fly at half-mast in honour of the slain Makadara principal magistrate Monica Kivuti.
Magistrate Kivuti was shot on Thursday afternoon at the Makadara Law Courts and succumbed to her injuries Friday night at the Nairobi Hospital.
Chief Justice Martha Koome said the flags will fly at half-mast until she is laid to rest.
“The Judiciary flag will fly at half-mast from today (Saturday) across all court stations until Hon Kivuti is laid to rest,” CJ Koome said in a statement on Saturday.
She said the decision was arrived at after a meeting of the Judiciary Leadership Team (JLT) which brings together the leadership of all five Superior Courts; the Magistracy, Kadhis Courts, Tribunals, the Magistrates and Judges Association and theJudicial Staff Association.
Koome said the meeting also resolved that Tuesday, June 18, be decalred a day of mourning for the entire Judiciary in solidarity with Kivuti’s family, friends, and colleagues as well as all Judges, Judicial officers and Staff who have been deeply affected by the tragedy.
CJ Koome said all court sittings for June 18 and matters listed across all courts and tribunals stand suspended.
“No Court will sit on this day. Matters that had been listed on Tuesday across all Courts and Tribunals will be accommodatedin the Court dairies on priority basis,” she said.
Koome directed that presiding Judges and heads of stations will lead remembrance meetings in common rooms in all court stations across the country on the mourning day at 10am to commiserate with Kivuti’s family and one another.
CJ Koome said courts in Nairobi will convene at Makadara and Milimani Law Courts for the commiseration.
She said the Judiciary Leadership Team (JLT) meeting was held to deliberate on the matter of Kivuti’s murder and the continuing threat to the lives of Judges, Judicial officers and staff in the course of their duties.
Koome noted that the tragic incident had exposed and amplified the Judiciary’s long-held security concerns.
