Dr. James Mwangi, Managing Director & CEO of Equity Group, was the chief Guest at the celebration of TVET at 100. He delivered a message on “Innovative approaches and initiatives to enhance quality and relevance of TVET to Labour Market and Societal needs.”

Stressed on how for a century TVET institutions have empowered countless individuals with skills and competence, directly translating to jobs and economic growth.

Dr. Mwangi highlighted in his speech, that there’s a growing need to move beyond the perception of TVETs as simply producers of labour. Investing in modern equipment, curricula aligned with industry needs, and highly skilled trainers is crucial to position these institutions as centres of excellence.

A societal shift is needed to embrace blue-collar opportunities alongside white-collar aspirations. With 90% of Kenya’s job market reliant on technical skills, encouraging and celebrating these career paths is essential.

Looking towards the future, Dr. Mwangi emphasized that equipping students with skills in Technology: Artificial Intelligence, Big Data, Analytics, Automation etc is no longer optional but essential in the face of the 4th Industrial Revolution. He championed a dual curriculum approach that merges theoretical knowledge with practical application and fosters an entrepreneurial mindset, empowering graduates to become job creators.

The “TVET at 100“ celebration serves as a timely opportunity to reflect, reassess, and revitalize these institutions in Kenya. Adequate investment and support are crucial to ensure TVET programs can effectively equip future generations with the skills needed to thrive in a rapidly evolving world.
