The Nairobi City County Chief Officer in-charge of Environment Geoffrey Mosiria continued with his relentless drive to rid residential areas off noise pollution as he made a night raid at a notorious Somali owned Bar and Restaurant within Kilimani area on Saturday, October 19, 2024.

Mosiria, accompanied by county government officers, Mosiria made a midnight raid at Fay Bistro, a nightclub in Kilimani, which frequently patrons’ revelers of Somali origin and confronted the management of the restaurant which at the time was playing loud music, in disregard of neighbours around the establishment.

In a video, posted online, Mosiria is seen first measuring the noise volume which was above the allowed decibels before confronting a woman who was at the time manning the club. The raid followed constant complaints from neighbours who have accused the nightclub of holding parties and playing loud music despite being located in a residential area.

“We are at Fay Bistro and it is midnight. The owners have been disturbing neighbor at night with very loud music as you can hear now. I have come to witness the concerns and complaints of the neighbours and I have confirmed that this place is in contradiction of the law on noise pollution.  This is a bar and restaurant in Kilimani where they have been holding parties and disturbing neighbours. They play loud music with impunity causing noise pollution. We can’t allow this to continue happening and the time to restore order in Nairobi is now,” Mosiria said.

However, the county chief officer had a tough time dealing with restaurant owners as a woman of Somali origin turned rowdy, confronting the county officers who stormed the club. The woman, who is the manager of the nightclub, protested being recorded, but Mosiria insisted that the officers would record the raid to ensure openness and transparency in their action.

“We are recording for the purpose of our records. We do not want you to later say that anyone harassed you. We are just here to do our work,” Mosiria said.

In the video, the woman is seen calling the owner of the club, as Mosiria insisted that action would be taken against the club’s management and the lady manager would be arrested immediately and presented to court on Tuesday after the Mashujaa Day holiday.

“We are going to take legal action against you, and we are going with madam so that she is arraigned in court on Tuesday,” the chief officer told the club owner on phone.

Mosiria has stated that he will not relent and the crackdown will go on until the county succeeds in its bid to reduce noise pollution in the county. Just recently, Mosiria was awarded with the prestigious Honorary Environmentalist of the Year at the Afri-Glo Choice Awards banquet held at Heron Portico Hotel.

The accolade recognizes his outstanding contributions to environmental conservation and sustainable development within the city. Mosiria has been at the forefront of Nairobi’s environmental initiatives, is known for his commitment to tackling issues such as noise pollution, waste management, and urban greening.
