Pwani Oil Products Limited, through its Detrex antibacterial soap brand, has partnered with the Kenya Progressive Nurses Association (KPNA) at Msambweni hospital, in Kwale County, to provide essential support to parents facing the challenges of raising children with cerebral palsy.

Cerebral palsy (CP) is a common neurologic disorder that affects movement, muscle tone and posture in children. Globally, it is reported as occurring in approximately 2-2.5 of 1000 live births. This significant prevalence underscores the urgent need for comprehensive support for the families with children suffering from cerebral palsy.

Maintaining proper hygiene plays a crucial role in ensuring the well-being of children suffering from the ailment, many of whom have heightened hygiene needs due to mobility and other health limitations. Poor hygiene can lead to infections and skin conditions that further impact their quality of life. Recognizing these challenges, Detrex donated several hygiene products to families, reinforcing the importance of daily cleanliness in preventing infections and improving overall well-being.

Raising a child with cerebral palsy can be financially and emotionally challenging for some families. Beyond the provision of hygiene products, understanding that these families require not only financial resources but also emotional and psychological support is essential. Detrex soap is thus committed to ensuring that parents receive guidance, counselling, and practical assistance to aid in caring for children with cerebral palsy.

Notably, access to specialized medical care, therapy and proper exercise equipment is limited. Further, the stigma and misconceptions about CP can lead to social isolation, discrimination and limited opportunities for the families. This requires awareness, education and community involvement. By partnering with nurses at Msambweni Hospital to actively offer guidance, emotional support and practical assistance to parents, Detrex empowered the parents with the knowledge and encouragement needed to provide the best care for their children. This support not only addresses physical health needs but also relieves the emotional and psychological burden on caregivers.

The partnership between Detrex soap and KPNA reaffirms a dedicated effort to support families in need and foster a more inclusive society. By combining healthcare expertise with essential hygiene support this collaboration improved the daily living conditions for people with cerebral palsy.
