Pwani Oil Clinches Top Honors in Water Efficiency

Pwani Oil is the winner of this year’s Water Efficiency Award at the 21st Kenya Association of Manufacturers (KAM) Energy Management Awards (EMA). The company emerged the overall winner in the category for its implementation of effective water conservation measures.

The win comes on the back of Pwani Oil’s bold 2030 sustainability goal to achieve 100 percent wastewater recycling under its Planet Pillar commitment. By the close of 2024, the company had already achieved 53 percent wastewater recycling, with a clear target to hit 70 percent by the end of 2025.

Pwani Oil was also nominated for the Digitization Award, underlining its growing leadership in smart and sustainable manufacturing.

“These wins reinforce Pwani Oil’s place as an industry trailblazer in water sustainability and its continued drive to adopt circular economy principles in manufacturing,” said Rajul Malde, Commercial Director at Pwani Oil.

Over 600 companies were represented at the awards ceremony hosted in Nairobi which celebrated advancements in sustainable energy use within Kenya’s manufacturing sector. The event was graced by First Lady Rachel Ruto and Energy Cabinet Secretary James Opiyo Wandayi.

KAM CEO Tobias Alando emphasized the need for inclusive sustainability, stating that it was the sure way to create lasting impact.

“In our sustainability journey, we must ask: who is being left behind? How do we make clean energy accessible to SMEs, counties, and the informal sector? Sustainability must also be a social strategy—creating jobs, strengthening communities, and improving equity,” he said.

KAM Chairperson Jane Karuku noted the associating recently refreshed its strategy and committed on building on its 65-year legacy to create prosperity through sustainable manufacturing.

KAM four pillars focus on global competitiveness, being export-led, empowering SMEs, and anchoring agriculture for industry.

Delivering his keynote, Energy CS Opiyo Wandayi called the event an opportunity to promote excellence in energy efficiency and sustainability.

“Modern energy services are foundational to economic development. This year’s theme, ‘Beyond Energy Efficiency: Inclusive Solutions for a Sustainable Future,’ underscores the collective roadmap for Kenya’s green future,” he said.

First Lady Rachel Ruto called for urgent collaboration to combat climate change:

“Let us join hands to enhance the adoption of energy-efficient practices and clean cooking technologies. Through education, incentives, and favorable policies, we can ensure long-term sustainability.”

The KAM Energy Management Awards, now in its 21st year, recognized winners across multiple categories including Green Building, Renewable Energy, Electricity Savings, Clean Cooking, Biogas Valorization, Financial Institutions, and County-Level Excellence.
