The services of buying electricity tokens through M-PESA have resumed.

In a statement on Tuesday, February 13th, 2024, Kenya Power announced that they resolved the delay on Monday.

“Following a recent system disruption that led to delays in the processing and delivery of prepaid tokens, we are glad to inform our customers that the issue was resolved on Monday,” reads the notice.

“Customers can now conveniently buy their tokens through M-Pesa paybill no 888880.”

Kenya Power noted that as of Monday evening, it had processed and sent out all electricity tokens purchased by respective customers via M-Pesa.

Also, customers can access tokens by dialling *977# and via Mypower App at any time.

Giant telecommunication company Safaricom had earlier said it was Kenya Power to blame for the delay in the purchase of tokens.

The telco in a clarification on the X platform exonerated itself from blame saying it was the utility firm’s duty to generate tokens, not them.

“Kindly note, that the token is generated by KPLC. They are having delays with token production, kindly allow them time to resolve the issue and send the token,” Safaricom said.

Safaricom was responding to a concern from a Kenyan.

The clarification came hot on the heels of pent-up frustration from a section of Kenyas who said they had not received their token despite having made a purchase nearly 24 hours later.

Kenya Power first confirmed that there was a glitch in the purchase of tokens on Saturday at 4:20 pm.

A notice from Kenya Power announcing the resumption of normalcy in the purchase of tokens at 7:50 pm Saturday was deleted Sunday morning.

The deletion came after frustrated Kenyans took to the comment section of the notice post to deny the resumption of normal services as they had not received their tokens.

Kenyans had taken to social media to pour out their frustration as many Kenya Power customers were stranded after they were not able to get token numbers despite paying for the same.
