President William Ruto’s tour of the United States of America (USA) enters its third day today (May 22nd, 2024, with a series of significant engagements lined up in Washington DC.

Today, he will begin with an official arrival ceremony at Andrews Air Force Base at 10:00 am (5pm Kenyan time).

  1. Arlington National Cemetery

The head of state will then proceed to Arlington National Cemetery to honour fallen soldiers.

The cemetery is one of two cemeteries in the US National Cemetery System that are maintained by the US Army.

Nearly 400,000 people are buried in the 639-acre land.

It was established on May 13, 1864, during the American Civil War after Arlington Estate, the land on which the cemetery was built.

  1. Congressional engagements

The President will thereafter engage with members of Congress, discussing key bilateral issues.

The meeting aims to fortify the mutual relations between the US and Kenya.

  1. Tech round table at the White House

In the afternoon, Ruto will participate in a tech round table at the White House.

The discussion will focus on Kenya’s leadership in the African tech sector and its role as a prime destination for digital investment.

On Thursday, Ruto who is accompanied by First Lady Mama Rachel is set to be hosted at the White House by President Joe Biden.

Later in the evening, Ruto and his guests will be hosted for a state dinner.

American presidents use these formal dinners to foster diplomacy, where official guests mingle with notable celebrities.

They will enjoy cuisines and performances from renowned entertainers.

This is the first state visit by a Kenyan head of state in two decades and the first by an African head of state since 2008.
