Meru Governor Kawira Mwangaza has been impeached by the county assembly for the third time, with 49 MCAs voting for her ouster.

During the voting on Thursday, three MCA’s did not vote, while 17 others voted against the impeachment motion.

The motion of impeachment was moved by Zipporah Kinya–the Deputy majority leader, who cited three grounds, including Gross violation of the constitution and other laws, gross misconduct, and abuse of office.

Although Thursday marked the third time Governor Mwangaza has been impeached at the assembly, there have been five attempts to hound her out of office.

Early Thursday, security had been tightened around the Meru County Assembly premises where MCAs were expected to debate on Governor Kawira Mwangaza’s impeachment

The police contingent was under North Imenti Sub County Police commander, and deployed after reports that goons would invade and torch the premises.

Gunshots were heard during the night as some goons tried gain entry to the assembly but they repulsed by the heavy presence of police officers.

Last week, the mpeachment motion filed was withdrawn after the mover filed a withdrawal notice.

The motion was then debated on and ratified by the members.

“This assembly approves the request by the deputy leader of the majority party Zipporah Kinya to withdraw the notice of motion for the removal of office of Governor Kawira Mwangaza by impeachment whose notice was issued on Wednesday, July 17 2024,” said the Speaker.

One of the main reasons for the withdrawal of the motion was that it was overtaken by time since such a motion ought to be debated and sent to the Senate within 10 days after the notice.

At the same time, withdrawing the motion meant the ongoing court case  lacked a  subject matter and will now be null and void.

A day after the withdrawal of the notice, the Deputy majority leader Ziporah Kinya filed a fresh notice of impeachment.
