Former Nairobi Governor Dr. Evans Kidero is warming up for a second stab at the Nairobi gubernatorial seat come the 2027 general elections.
With just over two years to the 2027 elections, Kidero has already started working on a comeback to City Hall for his second term and the political grapevine in the city has already been gripped with anxiety.
Kidero has been tipped to make a delicate political calculation which will offer Nairobi with a real solution to the governance gap that the county has been facing over the years.
Kidero is said to be planning to pick on top media personality Caroline Mutoko as his running mate for his second stab at Nairobi governorship come 2027.
Kidero in 2013 successfully won the Nairobi gubernatorial seat on an ODM ticket with Jonathan Mueke as his running mate in the former CORD coalition and the Kenya National Trading Corporation (KNTC) chairman is said to be eyeing Mutoko as a running mate in a delicate balancing act.
Kidero will be hoping to tap into the unexploited youth group of new voters which Mutoko can be instrumental in swaying to their vote basket.
As well, Kidero hopes to capitalize on the votes of the blue and white collar voting block which both he and Mutoko have the capability to convince while the tribal divide in Nairobi, often aligning with the different political formations, can be captivated by the Kidero-Mutoko ticket just like Nairobi did in 2013 with the Kidero-Mueke ticket.
According to Isaac Awuondo who is the NCBA bank chairman, also seen as the man set to become Kidero’s campaign chairman, Kidero will easily beat other challengers with Mutoko as his running mate.
“People have ambition and plans. Kidero had a plan to work for Nairobi and this was started in his first term as the pioneer Nairobi governor. I think he will come back for a second term and with the awakening of people in Nairobi, Caroline Mutoko to me seems an ideal candidate for deputy governor. She is an excellent manager, great communicator and an exemplary leader who has no past blemishes. She will be a good choice for Kidero’s running mate I. 2027 and I am sure the two will win elections very early,” Awuondo says.
Caroline Mutoko has been a household radio personality for over two decades and most of the Nairobi’s electorates will be happy to vote for this combination which provides a technocratic kind of leadership for a fast moving city in the fast moving digital world.
Insiders opine that Kidero has been quietly laying the groundwork for a potential return to power and Mutoko is a perfect choice having been in the media for over 20 years in Nairobi. Many believe that Mutoko will bring to City Hall the reality of Nairobi residents who she has over the years interacted with a the most popular voice on urban radio across the city.
