Former Turkana County Attorney Erastus Edung Ethekon has been nominated for the position of chairperson of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC).
In a statement, Head of Public Service Felix Koskei said President William Ruto has also nominated six other persons as members of the commission.
These are Ann Njeri Nderitu (Nyandarua); Moses Alutalala Mukhwana (Kakamega); Mary Karen Sorobit, (Uasin Gishu); Hassan Noor Hassan (Mandera); Francis Odhiambo Aduol (Kisumu) and Fahima Araphat Abdallah (Lamu).
“This presidential action follows the recommendations of the Selection Panel on the recruitment of nominees for the positions of Chairperson and Members of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission, as transmitted on Tuesday, May 6, 2025,” Koskei said.
He said in accordance with the law, the nominations have been transmitted to the National Assembly for consideration and approval by Parliament.
“In recognition of the indispensable role of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) as one of the cornerstone institutions of our democracy and a custodian of electoral management, His Excellency the President has urged the National Assembly to prioritise the consideration of these nominations,” he added.
Interviews for the chairperson position were held from March 24 to 26, while those for commissioner roles ran from March 26 to April 24.
The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) Selection Panel submitted its final report on the recruitment of the commission’s chairperson and six members to the President on May 6.
IEBC has not been fully constituted since 2023, following the expiration of Chebukati’s term.
A total of 37 people applied for the chairperson position.
A total of 11 candidates were interviewed for the chairperson role, including former Judiciary Chief Registrar Anne Amadi and former Commission for the Implementation of the Constitution Chairperson Charles Nyachae. National Elections Board and Election Dispute Resolution Committee chairpersons
Other candidates included former Nzoia Sugar Company boss Saul Simiyu Wasilwa, United Democratic Alliance (UDA) National Elections Board and Election Dispute Resolution Committee chairperson Joy Mdivo, Trans Nzoia County Assembly Principal Legal Counsel Edward Katama Ngeywa, former Nairobi County Town Clerk Jacob Ngwele Muvengei
Naivasha Law Courts Chief Magistrate Abdulqadir Lorot Ramadhan, former Turkana County Attorney Erastus Edung Ethekon, ex-deputy chief registrar of the Judiciary Francis Kakai Kissinger, High Court lawyer Lilian Wanjiku Manegene, and amd former Football Kenya Federation (FKF) Vice President Robert Akumu Asembo.
