The residents of Kariobangi North ward have protested for not benefiting from the bursary funds meant for needy students.

The residents accused the area Member of County Assembly (MCA) Joel Munuve for failing to adequately and efficiently give them bursary funds.

They accused him of not being transparent and accountable in dishing out the monies meant to educate needy and vulnerable kids from poor backgrounds.

“We are aware that the Nairobi Governor allocates Ksh7 million to each and every ward on the city for bursaries but in this area there’s nothing to show that needy students from Kariobangi North ward have been given the money amounting to that sum,” they claimed.

They claimed that the MCA issues few cheques compared to the Ksh7 million allocated and on top of that is that those who benefit are from a particular community that he favours against the other tribes who reside in the ward.

According to investigations and sources at City Hall, the MCA has been selling the bursaries meant for his ward to other MCAs to make a quick kill.

The other bursary scam involving the MCA is that he has been colluding with schools to issue bursaries to fictitious students and creating a list of names where cheques have been issued to non-existent learning institutions.

On realising that he is being pushed by the Nairobi City Government to account for the burasries, the MCA came out with his guns blazing by accusing the governor Johnson Sakaja of witch-hunt and vendetta.

The MCA in video on youtube that has gone viral is accusing the Nairobi Governor’s office of withholding bursary funds meant for Kariobangi North ward because of being a critic of Sakaja’s administration.

The Kariobangi North residents dismissed the claims by their MCA Joel Munve saying that he is looking for sympathy by trying to blackmail and soil Sakaja’s name.

“We support the governor in his anti-corruption drive against rogue and corrupt MCAs and call on him to ensure that the bursary funds meant for Kariobangi North ward are dished transparently and fairly,” they said.

They called on Sakaja and the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) to investigate Munuve over the bursary funds he was allocated last year for possible prosecution and also ensure that he returns the money for re-distribution for bursaries in the ward if he does not account how he spent the funds.

“We don’t trust Munuve and therefore want Sakaja to deploy officers from City Hall and also pick some residents as monitors to oversee the process of issuing the bursary funds which have been released for distribution,” they appealed.
