Major General David Kimaiyo Tarus Appointed as the new Kenya Army Commander

Major General David Kimaiyo Tarus has been appointed as the new Kenya Army Commander.

The reshuffle in the Ministry of Defense sees Tarus promoted to his new position, and he replaces Lieutenant General Peter Mbogo Njiru, whose term in the service has ended.

“William Samoei Ruto, C.G.H., President of the Republic of Kenya, and Commander-in-Chief of the Defence Forces pursuant to Section 9(2)(a) of the Kenya Defence Forces Act, has today promoted Major General Charles Muriu Kahariri to the rank of Lieutenant General and appointed him the Vice Chief of the Defence Forces. He replaces Lieutenant General Jonah Maina Mwangi, whose term has come to an end after 42 years of service.

“Further, the President has promoted and appointed Major General David Kimaiyo Tarus to the rank of Lieutenant General and appointed him the Commander of the Kenya Army. Tarus replaces Lieutenant General Peter Mbogo Njiru whose term has come to an end after 39 years of service.

“Until his appointment as Commander Kenya Army, Lieutenant General David Kimaiyo Tarus was the Deputy Army Commander,” the Ministry of Defense confirmed in a press release.

Major General Charles Muriu Kahariri has been promoted to the rank of Lieutenant General and appointed as Vice Chief of the Defence Forces.

Ruto also promoted and appointed Major General Jimson Longiro to the rank of Lieutenant General and consequently appointed him Vice Chancellor of the National Defense University. Until his appointment, Lieutenant General Jimson Longiro was the Commander of the Kenya Navy.

Brigadier Thomas Njoroge Ng’ang’a has been promoted to the rank of Major General and appointed the Commander of the Kenya Navy. Before this promotion, Ng’ang’a was the Base Commander Kenya Navy at Manda base.

Other changes

Major General Juma Shee Mwinyikai has been promoted to Lieutenant General and appointed Commandant of the National Defense College.

Major General Mohamed Nur Hassan has been posted to the headquarters of the Kenya Army and appointed Deputy Army Commander.

Brigadier Luka Kipkemoi Kutto has been promoted to Major General and appointed General Officer Commanding Eastern Command.

Major General Aphaxard Muthuri Kiugu has been posted to the Kenya Military Academy and appointed commandant.

Major General John Maison Nkoimo moves to Border Security Command and has been appointed General Officer Commanding.

Brigadier Peter Shikuku Chelimo has been transferred to the headquarters of the Kenya Navy and appointed Deputy Navy Commander.

Brigadier Yahya Abdi has been moved to the National Defence College and appointed Senior Directing Staff Navy.

Speaking today in Viwandani Ward of Makadara Sub County, Kuria activated the youth to brace themselves for an electrifying competition in the tournament meant to empower the youth. The tournament will be held at STAR OF HOPE, starting from 10:00 AM, bringing together players and fans for a day of skill, connection, and opportunity. Participants will compete for exciting rewards, with the GRAND PRIZE BEING A MOTORBIKE, alongside other cash prizes of KSH 40,000, KSH 20,000, and KSH 10,000. This mega tournament will be played across five zones where the winner in every zone will pocket Ksh. 5000 and a chance to move into the next stage for an opportunity to win a Motor Cycle. The runners up in every zone will walk away with a Ksh. 3000 while number three wins Ksh. 2000. In that spirit, Kuria has taken it upon himself to bring the community together through the VIWANDANI POOL TOURNAMENT, set for 24TH MAY 2026. Kiria intones that this is not just competition, it is a statement of inclusion, youth empowerment, and practical engagement at the grassroots level. Kuria encouraged all interested participants to register with thekir local cordinators and be part of this transformative experience. “This is what meaningful leadership looks like—creating real opportunities where talent is recognized and rewarded. It is about moving beyond words and ensuring that progress can be seen and felt within the community,” Kuria said. Kuria, who is running for the position of Makadara Membernof Parliament has been active in empowering the residents of Makadara constituency using sports as a way of empowerment.
