Opposition party leaders Kalonzo Musyoka, Martha Karua and Eugene Wamalwa  solidarity with the victims of enforced disappearances were in court for the hearing of abduction cases on Wednesday, January 8th, 2025 in Nairobi.

The senior counsels including Kalonzo Musyoka leader of Wiper and Azimio coalition co-principal, Narc Kenya’s Karua who was the 2022 presidential elections ex-Premier Raila Odinga’s running mate  and former Defence minister Eugene Wamalwa of Democratic Action Party of Kenya (DAP-K) joined the proceedings to identify those responsible of the abductions, demand accountability on the circumstances surrounding the disappearances.

Also present were Law Society of Kenya (LSK) President Faith Odhiambo and Ndegwa Njiru lawyer who represented former Deputy President Nderitu Gachagua during his impeachment trial.

“As promised, and in my capacity as Senior Counsel, I am at Milimani High Court in Nairobi this morning with fellow Senior Counsel @MarthaKarua, @EugeneLWamalwa, and @NjiruAdv, to seek justice for our fellow Kenyans whose constitutionally guaranteed rights to free speech and expression have been violated by an increasingly autocratic and uncaring Ruto regime,” said Kalonzo on his X account.
Opposition leaders Azimio co-principal Kalonzo Musyoka (in tie), Narc-Kenya party leader Martha Karua (extreme left) and Bernard Kavuli (second left) who was allegedly abducted together with family members of abductees at Milimani Court on January 8, 2025

Following revelations that the Inspector General of the National Police Service (NPS) would not honour court summons issued on December 31, 2024, to appear before Justice Bahati today, because he was in a meeting of national importance, Dr Musyoka poured cold water on the explanation: “We are not at war, so where are Inspector General of the National Police Service (NPS) Douglas Kanja and the National Intelligence Service (NIS) Director General Noordin Haji? This is a matter of grave importance.”

However, Justice Bahati Mwamuye adjourned the case to Monday January 27, 2025 and ordered that Inspector General (IG) of the National Police Service Douglas Kanja appear together with National Intelligence Services (NIS) boss Noordin Haji.
Later, the People’s Loyal Opposition Team led Kalonzo held a Media Briefing and decried the rising cases of enforced abductions, the chest thumping of senior Kenya Kwanza leaders including Chief Abductor Mr William Ruto, Majority Leader Kimani Ichungwa and COTU Secretary General Francis Atwoli over the weekend in Bungoma

Since the abductions, victims Kibet Bull, Ronny Kiplagat, Billy Mwangi, Peter Muteti, Bernard Kavuli, and Kelvin Muthoni have been released, but Steve Mbisi remains unaccounted for.

Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja and Director of Criminal Investigations Mohamed Amin were expected to appear in court to show cause why they should not be cited for contempt.

The two officials were previously ordered by Justice Diana Kavedza to produce six suspects abducted in December 2024, but the order was not complied with, prompting the court’s directive for their appearance on Wednesday.

They however did not show up.

Kanja and Amin, along with the Director of Public Prosecutions Renson Igonga and Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen, were named in the petition.

The petitioners including LSK and the Kenya Commission on Human Rights, have sought orders for the authorities to produce the abducted youths.
