A Mombasa-based doctor has been charged for sexually assaulting a patient at the Pandya Hospital in Mombasa.

Dias Jumba Wabwire was arraigned before chief magistrate Alex Ithuku at the Mombasa high court on Monday, February 1st, 2025 where he was charged with one count of rape.

Wabwire is accused of raping a patient at 5 am on 31st January 2025 at the Pandya hospital, who was seeking dialysis services at the facility.

He however denied the charge and was released on a Ksh.500,000 bond with a surety of a similar amount after he pleaded not guilty.

Women’s rights organisation the Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA) has condemned the incident, saying that the woman had earlier been raped by the same suspect, calling for the arrest of more people whom they accused of obstructing the course of justice

“The DCI and ODPP must also investigate and charge the specific staff members who knew about the act and took no action. FIDA will actively monitor this case, protect the survivor and protect her to make sure she gets justice,” said Jane Onyango, a lawyer with FIDA.

The case will be mentioned on 17 February 2025.
