Juja Member of Parliament (MP) George Koimburi has been arrested.

According to reports, Koimburi an ally of former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua was apprehended outside his home on Tuesday, February 18th, 2025  morning and transported to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) headquarters for questioning.

Koimburi, who had previously claimed that the government spent some Ksh 13 billion campaigning for Raila Odinga in the African Union Commission (AUC) elections, was apprehended shortly after leaving his residence on Kenyatta Road in Juja.

Speaking before his arrest, the MP claimed that two Subaru vehicles were stationed outside his house, and that DCI officers apprehended him before driving him to Kiambu Road.

His arrest comes amid rising political tensions following Kenya’s failed bid for the AUC chairmanship.

Koimburi, a vocal critic of the government, questioned the rationale for the alleged campaign spending, escalating political debate.

Police have yet to release an official statement about the arrest.

Kikuyu MP Kimani Ichung’wah has proposed stern action against Juja MP George Koimburi following his allegations of bribery of African leaders during the recent AUC elections.

Speaking during Parliament proceedings on Tuesday, February 18, Ichung’wah expressed regret over the lawmaker’s statements.

Ichung’wah noted that the MP was a repeat offender having claimed that there was bribery of MPs during the Finance Bill 2024 and impeachment of former DP Rigathi Gachagua.

Therefore, Ichung’wah proposed for a lawmaker to propose a motion to name the MP – one of the disciplinary options listed in the Standing Orders.

“Even within our standing orders, we have put it that you cannot disparage the name of a foreign President. We must express our disgust at the actions of the MP who claimed that Kenya spent Ksh13 billion. From where? The money we did not appropriate. He is never here to know how money is appropriated,” the majority leader remarked.

“I want to propose that the Juja MP must be named in this house because that is a bad habit he has formed.

According to the Standing Orders, the MP could be forced to apologise to his colleagues and even face suspension.

“Whenever a member shall have been named by the Speaker or the Chairperson, then if the breach has been committed by such member in the House, the Speaker shall order the Member to withdraw from the Chamber and the precincts of the Assembly,” reads the Standing Orders in part.

“A suspended Member is considered a stranger and in addition, he or she is barred from entering the precincts of the Assembly without the written consent of a Speaker. It is noteworthy that a Member who has been ordered to withdraw from the precincts of the Assembly or has been suspended forfeits the right of access to the precincts of the Assembly except for instances when the suspended Member is to appear before a Committee of the House for the consideration of a Bill sponsored by the Member. ”

Already, the MP was arrested by the DCI on Tuesday morning and interrogated over the remarks made on the weekend.

According to the MP, President William Ruto spent over Ksh13 billion to support former Prime Minister Raila Odinga’s AUC bid.
