Days after Kenya was hit with devastating heavy rainfall which left behind trails of destruction and the unfortunate loss of 45 lives following floods that hit the country, especially the capital Nairobi, Green Congress of Kenya (GCK) Party Leader Hillary Alila has called on Kenya to embrace environmentally friendly style of leadership to avert the country from calamities and loss of lives.
While calling on Kenyans to join Green Congress of Kenya, which is a political party grounded on the green and renewable energy as a way to create a better environment and create sustainable jobs for the country’s young generations, Alila noted that disasters like the one witnessed last week in Nairobi and across the country can be averted if the country elected leaders who have a passion and focus towards environmental sustainability as opposed to mere political rhetoric which often leads to the election of leaders who can hardly formulate policies to help the common man.
According to Alila, the existential threat facing humanity today is unabated environmental degradation and climate change meaning that the planet is perilously warming and ecosystems fundamentally changing for the worse as was witnessed with the torrential rains last week, before the traditional dates for the onset of the long rains season.
Alila has called on Kenyans to join GCK here https://gck.or.ke/gckmembership/ as he looks to rally all citizens to not only elect leaders based on their political connections or oratory skills, but based on their capabilities to make the world a better place by ensuring that the country has friendly environmental policies.
“Pandemics traceable to our interaction with the environment and buoyed by our consumerist market economy has continued to throw us into chaos and suffering. Our politics is increasingly deviating from the fundamental goal of providing lasting solutions to this problem. This must change. GCK continues to listen to the voice of the people and the facts of science. We will make sound choices to contribute in achieving SDGs and contribute to the universal goal of protecting future generations from predictable calamities,” Alila noted.
“On my behalf and on behalf of all members of the GCK and Kenyans who believe in our resolve for a better world, I wish to convey my heartfelt sympathies to the flood victims. This must not be our modus operandi. We have to change and that change has to begin now by all of us registering to GCK and helping us take charge of the policy formulation of our country not just for us but for our future generations,” Alila added.
“I have said this and I am saying it again, we must fix our politics. For far too long Kenyans have been trapped in a political circus with mainstream political parties perpetually chocking under the grip of a few individuals and entrenched cartels. This has created a tragic culture where political leadership and managers of public affairs have fundamentally lost capacity to be transparent and accountable. As a consequence, tax money has over the years fallen captive of these cartels whose appetite for deal money has far overtaken their call to duty. As a result, the gap between the rich and the poor has increased with the poor drifting further into destitution. In addition, citizens have increasingly been disenfranchised to a point where their votes no longer counts,” Alila asserted.
GCK is providing an alternative platform championing a Green Coalition to halt this entrenched and destructive political/economic system. We can salvage the disillusioned and hopeless young generation. We can protect and conserve our natural resources and most importantly foster equality for all through sound policies and programs. The institutions and the entire architecture which govern and sustain our society should be, and indeed can be, guided by Green philosophies. In our rich diversity we can unite for our own good under the Green umbrella.
