Floods Claim 169 Kenyan Lives, Interior Ministry Reveals

A total of One hundred and 69 (169) Kenyans have so far  been killed by floods

In a statement by the Ministry of Interior announced on Tuesday, April 30th, 2024, that it had recorded an additional 66 deaths, bringing the total to 169.

“The mudslide in Mai Mahiu claimed 46 lives; Garissa reported 4 lives lost while Sindo, Homa Bay, reported another 4 fatalities,” the ministry said.

The government said another 102 individuals have sustained injuries across the affected regions

“A total of 91 people are currently missing. Mai Mahiu accounts for 53 of these missing persons while Garissa has reported 16 missing persons.”

“30,099 households have been displaced, affecting approximately 150,495 individuals. In Sindo, Homa Bay, 161 households have been displaced.”

The ministry said the number of Kenyans affected by the floods stands at approximately 190,942.

The counties that have been adversely affected by floods in the last 24 hours are Nairobi, Tana River, West Pokot, and Homa Bay.

Additionally, landslides and mudslides have impacted residents of Murang’a and Nakuru counties.

The Interior Ministry added that search, rescue, and retrieval operations in Nakuru due to the recent mudslide are ongoing.

“A reporting desk manned by representatives from the National Government, Nakuru County, and the Kenya Red Cross has been set up at the site of the tragedy in Mai Mahiu.

“We call for continued vigilance and adherence to safety measures issued by local authorities.”
