Joseph, a hardworking small business owner, was busy at his hardware shop when his phone rang. The caller, sounding professional, introduced himself as a supplier Joseph had recently contacted.
The caller claimed Joseph’s order was ready but urgently required a deposit to avoid delays. He then asked to share payment details.
Joseph hesitated. He remembered making a deposit the previous week and questioned the urgency. The caller quickly responded, “Oh, yes, but the system didn’t reflect it. To secure your order, please send the amount again. It’ll be refunded once we sort the error. Time is of the essence!”
Alarm bells rang in Joseph’s mind. He recalled his bank’s frequent security alerts and refused to act on the suspicious request. Instead, he called his bank’s official customer service number, listed on their website.
The bank confirmed Joseph was being scammed. Thanks to his vigilance, he avoided losing money to a fraudster.
Fraudsters Are Always Scheming: Protect Yourself
Joseph’s experience is a reminder of how scammers use pressure tactics to manipulate their victims. Stay ahead by following these essential safety tips:
  1. Be Sceptical of Urgency
Scammers often create a sense of urgency to make you act without thinking. Pause and verify before responding.
  2. Verify Directly
Always contact the source using official channels before acting on requests.
  3. Protect Your Information
Avoid sharing personal or financial details with unknown callers, emails, or links.
  4. Do not give your phone to strangers
They use the opportunity to swap or change your sim card.
