Nairobi- Monday, 27th January 2025: The ongoing Nairobi City County cleanup initiative is set to shift focus to estate cleanups, as 3,500 members of the Green Army braved a Sunday evening downpour to complete the collective cleanup of Nairobi’s Central Business District (CBD) and prepare to extend their efforts to residential areas.
While addressing the gathering, Nairobi Governor Sakaja Johnson assured the team that this was just the beginning. He said the plan was to shift the focus from CBD to neighbourhoods across the city in a coordinated effort to clean up and bring order in Nairobi.
“This is the last day we are collectively, as 3,500 members, participating in the CBD clean-up. Over the past weeks, you’ve done an exceptional job. We will now move to the estates, cleaning them one by one,” the Governor said.
Leading the team in celebratory songs, Sakaja shared that plans are underway to employ the 3,500 Green Army members on a permanent and pensionable basis under the county government. However, he stressed that this would be dependent on infrastructure and systems being put in place.
“You’ve done a commendable job. Plans are in motion to ensure your employment becomes permanent and pensionable. But you also need to do your part as we do ours. Employment will be based on merit and the hard work each of you puts in,” Sakaja assured.
The Governor also outlined plans to establish the Green Nairobi Company this year. The company will operate autonomously and oversee garbage collection, environmental management, and related tasks across the city.
“Cleanliness is our collective responsibility,” Sakaja concluded. “Let’s all participate, not only in cleaning but also in maintaining a clean Nairobi.”
Joined by close to 40 Members of County Assembly (MCAs), the Governor pledged to work collaboratively to restore order and cleanliness in the capital. He emphasized that maintaining a clean city is a shared duty, calling on residents to actively participate. Also present was the Deputy Governor and CECs.
The Governor commended the Green Army for their dedication and revealed that even President William Ruto had taken note of their efforts.
“The President has expressed his pride in what you’re doing. Let’s push harder and deliver for our people,” Sakaja said.
The Green Army, established under the Green Nairobi Department, has been focused on cleaning the CBD in recent weeks to create a cleaner and more organized urban environment. Moving forward, the team will expand its efforts to cover estates across Nairobi in a systematic and organized manner.
