Embattled Moi University Vice Chancellor Isaac Kosgey has been sent on an eight-month compulsory leave.

The recently constituted Moi University council has sent the VC home following a mandate given to them by Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Ogamba to restore the university to its former glory.

Moi University Council Chairperson Noah Midamba said that Kosgey will be replaced by Kiplagat Kotut who was the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academics, Research & Extension) at Embu University.

“The council held a meeting on the 30th and 31st of January 2025 and made important decisions including some major changes in the management of the university. The Vice-Chancellor Professor Isaac Kosgey began his eight months annual leave on Thursday, January 30, 2025, “Midamba said.

“Secondly, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor Academic Research and Extension and Student Affairs Professor Isaac Kimengi has proceeded on a one-year sabbatical leave. Thirdly, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor Administration, Planning and Strategy Professor Henry Kiriamiti has proceeded on a one-year sabbatical leave.”

The council also revealed that the legal and chief finance officers in the struggling institution had been suspended.

“The Chief Finance officer and Legal officers have been suspended. Interviews were undertaken and the following outstanding scholars with impeccable credentials and experience were identified to lead the Moi University in the interim,” Midamba said.

“Their acting appointment was effective from Friday, January 31, 2025. I have the honour to announce the new acting Vice Chancellor of Moi University Professor Kiplagat Kotut. I also have the pleasure to announce the new acting Deputy Vice-Chancellor Academic, Research and Extension Student Affairs Professor Khayemba Ongeti,” Midamba added.

The second-oldest university has been dogged by management problems which have seen professors come and go while the institution sank into deeper crisis.

With cashflow problems running into billions of shillings in debt, Moi University is struggling to get back to its former glory when it was a top learning destination to many KCSE candidates.

Local leaders also are seen to have made the running of the institution worse with most of them expressing interest in determining who leads the institution.

In 2016 former Governors Alex Tolgos, Jackson Mandago and Kapseret MP Oscar Sudi stormed the institution to kick out then-acting Vice Chancellor Laban Ayiro in favour of their choice candidate for the job who has now been placed under compulsory leave.
