Nairobi Governor Sakaja Johnson yesterday, Sunday 2nd February, 2025, celebrated his 40th birthday at a night clean up exercise in a special way where he shared a cake with 3,500 Green Army personnel before leading them in a massive clean-up of the Central Business District (CBD).
The clean-up, now a weekly tradition every Sunday, has significantly contributed to the removal of illegal signage and the restoration of order in the city’s streets.
Speaking during the exercise, Sakaja expressed his gratitude to the dedicated team, emphasizing their crucial role in transforming Nairobi into a cleaner and more organized city.
“This is the best birthday ever celebrating it with all of you who work tirelessly for the great people of Nairobi. Even in the middle of the night, you overcome all odds to ensure our city remains clean,” Sakaja said.
The Green Army joined him in singing birthday songs before sharing the cake and embarking on the clean-up. The group, which operates under the Department of Green Nairobi, has been instrumental in maintaining cleanliness across all 17 sub-counties. While they focus on estates throughout the week, Sundays are dedicated to large-scale clean-ups in the city center.
“We have made great progress in cleaning up the city, and now we are shifting focus to our estates. Let’s not grow weary this is what we promised: a city of order and cleanliness where everyone can work and live in dignity,” he urged.
The Sunday clean-up initiative has also helped decongest the city’s walkways by relocating hawkers to designated areas and clearing unauthorized structures.
The Green Army’s efforts continue to receive praise from Nairobi residents, many of whom have noticed a significant improvement in the city’s cleanliness.
