In a significant step towards economic empowerment, a group of boda boda riders from Isinya, Kajiado County, has acquired a 14-seater matatu, expanding their transport business beyond motorcycle services.
The group, registered as Isinya Boda Boda Sacco, secured a Chama Investment loan from Equity Bank’s Isinya branch, leveraging their pooled savings to transition from motorcycles to vans for longer-distance routes. The matatu will operate on the Nairobi-Mombasa route under the Naekana Sacco fleet.
During the handover ceremony, Sacco Chairman Patrick Ng’ang’a expressed gratitude to Equity Bank for their support since the group began banking with them in 2019. “Equity bank has been good to us. We introduced ourselves to the bank when we were a small group of 40 operating at Stage Moja here in Isinya. They embraced us as members, trained us on savings and investment and now have given us a loan to buy this matatu,” said Ng’ang’a. He also noted that many members have benefited from individual loans, expanding their ventures and improving their livelihoods.
Benson Githae, Equity Nairobi East Regional Relationship Manager for Asset Finance, congratulated the group on their dedication to saving and their entrepreneurial spirit. “We are here to celebrate these industrious boda boda riders and this major milestone in their investment journey. We will continue enhancing this Chama Investment Loan product, which targets micro entrepreneurs in groups who wish to invest collectively,” said Githae.
Equity Bank Kenya Senior Relationship Manager for Pamoja Banking, Annrita Muchiri, commended the group and reaffirmed the bank’s commitment to uplifting small businesses. “We will continue to train boda boda riders and other investment groups for women and youth on financial literacy, especially in areas such as savings, investments and debt management,” said Muchiri.
Isinya branch manager Grace Gworo urged the group to stay focused and take advantage of more investment opportunities and financial support from the branch. She highlighted the wide range of products offered by the bank, including insurance premium financing, as well as agricultural and livestock financing.
The development marks a new chapter for Isinya Boda Boda Sacco, promising greater financial inclusion and broader economic opportunities for its members.
