Popular Kenyan comedian and satirist KK Mwenyewe, best known for his viral impersonations of former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, has died after a short illness.

KK, real name Zachariah Kariuki, was pronounced dead Monday night at Kiambu Level 4 Hospital, according to a fellow comedian and frequent collaborator, Kafengo.

In a heartfelt message, Kafengo said, “Rest in peace brother, you will forever be in our hearts. To the family and friends, may God give us strength during these hard times.”

KK Mwenyewe shot to fame on social media around late 2022 for his witty, humorous takes on political satire, often mimicking Gachagua’s distinctive speaking style and mannerisms often with immaculate precision.

Details about his illness and final moments are still emerging, but tributes continue to pour in as people remember his unmatched witticisms and comedic ingenuity.

The youthful comedian, rose to prominence soon after the Kenya Kwanza administration assumed power, had seen his growing popularity spark public hopes that former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua would recognize and support his talent as he did to Ivy Chelimo, the young woman who coined the nickname ‘Riggy G’.

However, in a past interview with Jeff Kuria, Kariuki revealed that such support had not come to fruition.

Lately, KK had evolved from Gachagua-styled content into creating broader and more diverse comedy, majoring mainly on short skits and collaborating with various other creators.

Busia Senator and presidential hopeful Okiya Omtatah joined the thousands of fans distraught by KK’s death, describing him as a courageous and talented artist whose work resonated with a generation.

“I am deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Zakaria Kariuki, popularly known as Mr. KK Mwenyewe, a young and talented comedian whose voice resonated with the spirit of a generation,” Omtatah said in a statement. “Through satire and art, Mr. KK courageously held a mirror to society, using humor not to divide, but to awaken, educate, and unite.”

Omtatah praised KK’s sharp political wit and authenticity, calling him “not just a comedian, but a cultural commentator and a brave young patriot.”

“Kenya has lost a powerful voice,” he said, offering condolences to KK’s family, friends, and the creative community. “May his soul rest in peace, and may his light continue to inspire courage and creativity in those he leaves behind.”

Also expressing their sympathy and shock was X personality Sholla Ard who wrote, “I’m honestly shaken. Like many people are having “short illnesses” & “sudden deaths”. Something’s not adding up. What’s really behind these sudden deaths & short illnesses? Is it stress? Silent diseases? Something deeper? Let’s talk, maybe we can prevent. RIP KK Mwenyewe.”

Fellow creative Willie Oeba also shared some words, writing, “The Leaders Of Tomorrow Are Dying Today. Rest In Peace KK Mwenyewe. A Great Talent & A Comrade.”

Also sending their condolences was Kiharu MP Ndindi Nyoro. He said: “This is tragic and sudden. Zachariah Kariuki (Mr KK Mwenyewe) was a very talented and creative comedian. We send our most heartfelt condolences to his family following his passing on. It is still unbelievable. Poleni sana. May KK Rest In Peace.”

Speaking to Citizen Digital in 2022, the Kisii University alumni said his friends pushed him into mimicking DP Gachagua.

He added that was not sure whether he would pull it off, but after consistent pressure from his friends, he decided to join an online challenge and emerged as an internet sensation with most of his videos going viral.

“It came super easy for me. My friends advised me to take up the Gachagua challenge and I pulled it off. I then decided to keep it up since everyone seems to be enjoying them so much,” he told this publication.

Growing steadily, KK Mwenyewe had already amassed a staggering following on Tiktok – he had accumulated 1 million followers and over 19 million ‘LIKES’.

His last video, an employment skit, was posted on July 4. His frequent collaborator was fellow female creator Cashina Ke.
