The Nairobi City County government has embarked on a process of making repairs on the playing surface of the Dandora Stadium artificial turf ahead of the 2025/2026 football season.

The stadium, which was largely used to host the Football Kenya Federation Premier League and National Super League matches in the 2024/2025 season as well as the 2025 Sakaja Super Cup is undergoing repairs to make the playing surface better. The repairs come after silent complaints by players about certain parts of the surface being bumpy and difficult to play on.

The county government of Nairobi has closed the stadium until these repair works are completed. The county government prides in the competition of Dandora stadium which has become a major facilty being used by Football Kenya Federation premier league teams as other national stadiums remain closed for renovations.

The renovations at Dandora Stadium will ensure that Premier League and NSL teams have a better playing turf raising the standards of football in the country.

The Nairobi City county has in the recent years since Governor Johnson Sakaja tok over helm at City Hall i. 2022 where the city has sen a progressive and significant sports infrastructure transformation, with multiple basketball courts and stadiums under construction across various neighborhoods.

These projects align with Governor Sakaja’s vision of providing accessible sports facilities across the city.

Additionally, several major stadiums are set for completion within the year. Joe Kadenge Stadium, formerly City Stadium has been u der construction with a significant part of the work having been completed and according to sources at City Hall, the stadium will be ready by the end of this year.

The construction and renovations of various sports facilities in Nairobi which are well on course are part of an elaborate initiative spearheaded by Governor Johnson Sakaja’s administration with an aim to enhance youth sports development and reduce congestion at existing facilities.

Additionally, small stadiums have been constructed in California, Mbotela, and the Uhuru Sports Complex, with another planned for Nairobi West. This will help ease the pressure currently on Dandora Stadium.

Nairobi Talent, Skills Development and Car CECM Brian Mulama, who also runs the Sports docket was earlier this year recognized and awarded for topping the rankings in the 2025 Pollster rankings awards gala.

The Talent, Skills Development and Care in the Nairobi City administration includes Early Childhood and Education, Social Services, Youth, Talent and Sports, which means CECM Mulama is in charge of working with the upcoming generation in a space where future leaders, innovators, and game-changers are molded.

In a span of three years, the Sakaja led administration has achieved milestones which includes the building and rehabilitation of seven Stadiums namely Woodley, Joe Kadenge (formerly City Stadium), Mwiki Stadium, Kihumbuni, Dessah in Eastleigh and Dandora Stadium which is currently the only stadium in Nairobi that is hosting the Football Kenya Federation Premier League matches in the city.

The Sh 276 million Dandora stadium was opened to the public after Governor Sakaja took over and sanctioned the completion of construction works after delays and controversy that delayed the completion of construction works in the stadium for almost six years.

The 4,000 sitting capacity stadium features a perimeter wall and a playing pitch equipped with an artificial turf with football field fixtures and utility rooms constructed to international standards. There are also floodlights and a storm water drainage as well as graffiti on a section of the stadium.

The construction of the stadium was commissioned by former Nairobi governor Mike Mbuvi Sonko in 2018. In 2019, the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) halted the construction works in the stadium following claims over the use of substandard materials in the construction works in the stadium.
