Kakamega, Kenya – Tuesday, 6 August 2024: BingwaFest, the multi-discipline sports extravaganza, will see its second edition kick off on Thursday, August 8, 2024, at the Mumias Sports Complex in Kakamega County. Over 1700 athletes have so far confirmed attendance through registration.
The second edition of BingwaFest will see competition across four sports, namely athletics, basketball, football, and 10-aside rugby for men and 7-aside for women. Rugby is a new addition to the event and will take place under the guidance and oversight of Kenya Rugby Union’s office for the sport’s development. Former Kenya Simbas international Fred Ollows will be on board as BingwaFest rugby tournament director.
Said Championship PR Manager, Katherine Arudo: “Western Kenya is a very important region when it comes to Kenyan sport, producing many of Kenya’s greatest athletes. When it comes to ball sports, no other region in the country has produced as many top athletes as the Western region. BingwaFest first took place in the City of Champions, Eldoret. We felt like this is the time to switch gears and bring it to Western Kenya, where we expect a very high level of competition. As we have done in the past, BingwaFest will see both male and female competitors receive equal prize money. We do this to grow the sport equally across the genders, and to foster equality in Kenyan sports.”
BingwaFest 2024 takes place courtesy of bookmaker Betika and its ‘Betika Na Community’ corporate responsibility imprint, as well as all the Football, Basketball, Athletics and Rugby governing bodies. The three-day event is in keeping with the goal of BingwaFest, which is to provide young Kenyans with a platform from which they can earn a livelihood from their sporting talent.
