Elly Barno of Nandi Bears Golf Club celebrated a remarkable victory at the NCBA Nandi Bears Open Shield, clinching his first Kenya Amateur Golf Championship (KAGC) title. The event was held at Nandi Bears Golf Club from 4th to 6th October 2024.
Taking full advantage of his home-course familiarity, Barno delivered an impressive performance, finishing the tournament with a total score of 217, just one over par, outpacing a competitive field of 69 golfers.
The 54-hole tournament began on a high note for Barno, who took an early lead with an outstanding opening round of 69 (-3) on Friday. His flawless start included a birdie on the second hole, followed by a series of steady pars. He continued his dominance on the front nine, securing two additional birdies on holes 6 and 8, and capped off his round with two more birdies on the back nine at holes 15 and 16.
Despite facing challenges in Saturday’s second round, where he carded a 75 (+3), Barno maintained his composure in the final round, posting a solid 73 (+1) on Sunday to secure the title.
Barno finished two strokes ahead of seasoned golfer Isaac Makokha from Kenya Railway Golf Club, who took second place with a score of 219 (+3). Makokha, one of Kenya’s most prominent amateur players and a trailblazer as one of the few deaf golfers on the circuit, recorded rounds of 75, 72, and 72.
John Kamais of Nakuru Golf Club, the recent winner of the 2024 NCBA Nyanza Open ‘Hippo Pot’ Tournament, secured third place with a total score of 221 (+5), demonstrating resilience with rounds of 76, 70, and 75.
