Get Ready for Hot days, Chilly Nights – Kenya Meteorological Department Forecasts

Rain is expected in the Central Highlands, Western Kenya, Lake Victoria Basin, Rift Valley, and North-western Kenya in the next one week, beginning Tuesday.

The Kenya Meteorological Department has in its seven-day forecast said isolated storms may occur in some of the areas over the forecast period ending Monday, October 21.

Areas such as Lokitang and Kakuma in Turkana county, Nakuru, Garsen, Kwale, Maralal, Narok, Kajiado and Nairobi as well as Murang’a, Kiambu, Nyeri and Nyandarua are forecast to receive up to 20mm rainfall.

The forecast shows that the intensity of the rain is expected to intensify in northwestern Kenya, where places such as Kakamega, Bungoma, Busia, Nyamoira, Kisii, Boment, Kericho, Uasin Gishu, Trans Nzoia and Homa Bay are forecast to receive rains of between 70-100mm.

Some pockets of the mentioned areas are expected to receive up to 120mm of rain during the seven days.

Hot days ahead

The Met department added that during the period under review, daytime temperatures are expected to soar beyond normal.

“Parts of the Coast, South-eastern lowlands, Northeastern and North-western Kenya will experience daytime temperatures above 30°C,” the Met department said.

The agency advised residents in areas that lie within the mentioned regions to stay hydrated, particularly those in Dadaab, Isiolo, Kalacha, Bunisa and Lokitaung where temperatures are forecast to soar above 35°C.

Meanwhile, daytime temperatures in areas within Nakuru, Elgeyo Marakwet, Nyeri, Murang’a and Kirinyaga are forecast to drop to between17°C – 20°C, while in Tharaka Nithi, this may go as low as less than 17°C.

Chilly nights

During the period under review, Kenya Met advised residents in Central Highlands and Central Rift Valley to prepare for cold nights.

The weatherman said nighttime temperatures in areas within the regions are likely to drop below 10°C.

These include Nakuru, Kirinya, Nyeri, Muran’ga and Tharaka Nithi, as well as Tsavo West. Temperatures will range between 8°C -10°C in Trans Nzoia, Elgeyo Marakwet, Uasin Gishu, Bomet, Kiambu, Machakos, Makueni, Kiambu, Laikipia and Meru.
