Kenya’s President William Ruto has left the country to attend the African Union Extraordinary Summit on the Post-Malabo Comprehensive Africa Agriculture Development Programme (CAADP).

Ruto left the country on Saturday, January 11th, 2023 morning for the summit which is being held in Kampala, Uganda.

In a statement, State House spokesperson Hussein Mohamed said the summit will assess the progress made towards the targets set and seek to adopt the Kampala Declaration, outlining a shared vision for transforming agri-food systems from 2026 to 2035.

“The outcomes are expected to shape agricultural policies that drive economic growth and achieve food security across the continent,” he said.

CAADP, is a key AU Agenda 2063 initiative that aims to eradicate hunger and poverty through agriculture-led development and transform Africa’s agri-food systems.

President Ruto is also expected to showcase Kenya’s efforts to enhance food security, reduce poverty, create jobs and promote sustainable growth.

“He will also highlight the alignment of CAADP with Kenya’s Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda and Vision 2030, reaffirming the country’s commitment to agricultural transformation,” Hussein added.

Ruto is also expected to hold several sideline meetings with President Yoweri Museveni of Uganda and other leaders in a bid to advance regional priorities.

The sideline talks will also include efforts to build consensus and support for his role as Champion of the AU Institutional Reforms, ahead of his inaugural progress report on the reform agenda.

This will be the third foreign country President Ruto is visiting since the beginning of 2025.

He returned to the country on Wednesday after attending the inauguration of President John Mahama of Ghana where he also met various leaders.

He would later on visit Angola, where he met the country’s top leadership before he returned to Kenya.
