Eighteen million people have registered for the Social Health Insurance Fund (SHIF), according to the Ministry of Health.

Ministry Director General Patrick Amoth said on Wednesday that there has been a surge in the number of Kenyans registering for SHA with the numbers hitting 18,519,609.

This is as the ministry said that the pre-authorizations are now taking 12.9 minutes for outpatients while inpatient-related approvals are down to 3 hours from 6 hours.

Amoth said that 276,256 individuals registered for SHA in the last week giving a 1.5 per cent increase in SHA registration.

He said there has been daily variation in the number of registrations, with the highest numbers being recorded on January 23 (116,447) and 24 January (103,023).

The number of dependants registered is 3,976,243 with two-thirds of these being children.

Regarding the Health Provider Portal, a total of 8,761 health facilities have enrolled, representing 55 per cent of active health facilities in Kenya.

The ministry said that 88 per cent of the facilities have had successful log-ins into the portal.

The official said Mombasa County is leading in the number of SHA uptake among its population 518,208 individuals now registered for SHA over the last eight days alone.

This follows a massive Rapid Results Initiative by the County Government of Mombasa which partnered with the Health Ministry for the registration campaign.

Launched on January 24, the campaign targeted 730 primary and secondary schools.

“On 23 and 24 January 2025, the County contributed one-third of total daily SHA registrations,” said Amoth.

Amoth said that so far Mombasa County has the highest coverage of SHA registration representing 43.5 per cent of the population that has registered for SHA so far.

“The Mombasa County RRI has demonstrated that focused targeted registration using community health promoters is a strategy that other counties can borrow to increase SHA registration coverage,’’ Amoth said.

“Good planning, leadership at all levels and active monitoring of the process has been core to the success of this RRI.”
