The Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC) has introduced a course in Medical Insurance to help in addressing some of the Social Health Authority (SHA) challenges.
Chief Executive Officer of the Kenya Medical Training College Dr. Kelly Oluoch says the institution is seeking to work with the Ministry of Health to ensure success in the roll out of the Social Health Authority (SHA) services.
During a routine visit in KMTC Bondo, Oluoch revealed that the medical institutionis working on ways support some of the government policies through research and innovation.
“We note that the rollout of SHA will require more qualified staff particularly ones able to help in pre-authorization, looking at claims management and ensuring there is efficiency in service provision,” said Oluoch.
According to Oluoch, KMTC’s mission is to equip students with essential skills that can help in addressing health disparities and to establish the college as a global leader in affordable healthcare training.
He highlighted KMTC’s role in producing highly trained healthcare workers and its commitment to research, curriculum development and policy creation and therefore encouraged qualified Form Four leavers to enroll with their institutions which are currently spread all over country.
The SHA insurance scheme has faced backlash from leaders and members of the public, who fault the inefficiency of the scheme in settling medical costs for patients.
Last week, lawmakers questioned whether SHA, a supposedly semi-autonomous body, was being overshadowed by interference from the Ministry of Health.
“When we created SHA, we did not intend for the Ministry to run it. The authority must prove it has the capacity to manage its own affairs,” said Kikuyu Member of Parliament Kimani Ichung’wah.
