The United States has cautioned its citizens to reconsider travelling to the Nairobi neighbourhood areas of Eastleigh and Kibera, citing crime and kidnapping activities.

In a travel advisory issued on Tuesday, the U.S embassy said that Kenya has increased cases of violent crimes such as armed carjacking, mugging, home invasion and kidnapping.

The embassy expressed concern that the local authorities lack the capacity to mitigate the threats, hence posing dire safety concerns to the public.

Counties within the Kenya-Somalia border were flagged for terrorism and kidnapping activities and were deemed to be no-go zones.

Further, West Pokot, Western Turkana County, Marsabit were also highlighted for cases of banditry and cross-border incursions.

The embassy also flagged Western Kenya and Nairobi for violent protests.

“Motorcycle crimes are common, where thieves grab items from victims and quickly flee the scene. Crimes typically occur in crowded areas or when people are distracted. Police have limited ability to respond to these crimes. Handbags, mobile phones, and other easy-to-reach valuables are the most stolen items,” the statement read in part.

In the advisory, US citizens were warned against travelling after dark due to security concerns and poor traffic safety.

In terms of terrorism activities, the U.S claimed that such attacks in public places occur without warning, citing cases of armed assaults, suicide operations, bomb or grenade attacks and kidnappings.

The embassy alleged reports of US citizens being held against their will in some schools that operate without a license. The embassy did not, however, list the said institutions.

“Some schools and behavior modification facilities in Kenya operate without licensing and oversight. There are reports of U.S. citizens being held against their will in these facilities and being physically abused,” the embassy said.

“The embassy frequently receives complaints from U.S. citizens who have been stopped by police, immigration, or customs officials asking for bribes.”

Those who decided to travel to Kenya were advised to stay alert, check the local media for breaking news, carry a copy of their US passport and enroll in the Smart Traveller Enrollment Program to receive security messages.
