Days after President William Ruto revoked the appointment of Irungu Nyakera as chairperson of the Kenyatta International Convention Centre (KICC) Board, Farmers Party of Kenya has initiated a move to exit the Kenya Kwanza Coalition.

Nyakera a former Transport Principal Secretary (PS) and the 2022 Murang’a gubernatorial  aspirant was replaced with Samuel Waweru Mwangi.

In a statement on Tuesday, April 8, 2025, Nyakera noted that the Farmers Party’s National Executive Committee okayed the decision to sever ties with the ruling coalition.

As part of the process, the party indicated that it had given a 30-day notice to the Registrar of Political Parties detailing its intention to ditch Kenya Kwanza.

“Accordingly, the National Executive Committee of the Farmers Party met on 7th April 2025 and unanimously resolved to exit the Kenya Kwanza Coalition,” the Farmers Party which recently picked the embattled former Kiambu Governor Ferdinand Waititu to lead the outfit, announced.

Dishonesty

Farmers Party cited dishonesty among the reasons for deciding to part ways with Kenya Kwanza and the issue of unfulfilled promises.

“While the Farmers Party in good faith entered into a Coalition Agreement with like-minded parties under the Kenya Kwanza Coalition on 23rd March 2022, it is with deep regret that we note a consistent pattern of dishonesty, political infidelity, and outright disregard for both the Constitution of Kenya (2010) and the spirit of our Coalition Agreement by our major our coalition partner,” the letter penned by party’s secretary Simon Kamangu read in part.

The latest development comes days after Nyakera lost his position. Through a gazette notice, the head of state dropped Nyakera and replaced him with Waweru.

Speaking after the revocation of his appointment, Nyakera indicated that he had been fired for failing to join Ruto for his weeklong Mt Kenya tour.

“I, William Samoei Ruto, President of the Republic of Kenya, appoints Samuel Waweru Mwangi to be the Chairperson of the Board of Directors of the Kenyatta International Convention Centre, for a period of three years, with effect from the April 1, 2025,” read the notice in part.

“The appointment of Irungu Nyakera is revoked,” it added.
