Maseno School Principal and Basketball Boss Paul Otula Dead

The Kenyan basketball fraternity is in mourning following the sudden death of Kenya Basketball Federation (KBF) President Paul Otula on Thursday morning.

Family sources confirmed that Otula succumbed to a cardiac arrest at his Nairobi home in the early hours of the morning. His body has since been transferred to the Lee Funeral Home.

The passing on of Otula has been confirmed by the federation, mourning him as a dedicated leader, mentor, and towering figure in Kenyan basketball.

In a statement sent to newsrooms, KBF recalled Otula’s service to the game, saying his contributions will continue influencing generations.

“It is with immense sorrow that the Kenya Basketball Federation announces the sudden passing of our Chairman, Mr. Paul Agali Otula, HSC, earlier today (Thursday). Mr. Otula was a dedicated leader, mentor, and towering figure in Kenyan basketball. His passion, vision, and service to the game and the nation will never be forgotten.

The federation said, that for over a decade, he has worked closely with different foundations in supporting various Basketball initiatives.

“He had a chequered career as a teacher of no mean repute; Principal of both Mangu High School and Maseno School; and an icon in basketball circles,” read the statement.

Otula, a towering figure in the development of Kenyan basketball, was first elected KBF President in 2008 after defeating incumbent George Omondi 26-5 in a vote held at Nyayo Stadium.
He was re-elected in 2021, edging out Cynthia Mumbo 57-45 in a fiercely contested election.

This mega tournament will be played across five zones where the winner in every zone will pocket Ksh. 5000 and a chance to move into the next stage for an opportunity to win a Motor Cycle. The runners up in every zone will walk away with a Ksh. 3000 while number three wins Ksh. 2000. In that spirit, Kuria has taken it upon himself to bring the community together through the VIWANDANI POOL TOURNAMENT, set for 24TH MAY 2026. Kiria intones that this is not just competition, it is a statement of inclusion, youth empowerment, and practical engagement at the grassroots level. Kuria encouraged all interested participants to register with thekir local cordinators and be part of this transformative experience. “This is what meaningful leadership looks like—creating real opportunities where talent is recognized and rewarded. It is about moving beyond words and ensuring that progress can be seen and felt within the community,” Kuria said. Kuria, who is running for the position of Makadara Membernof Parliament has been active in empowering the residents of Makadara constituency using sports as a way of empowerment.
