For the second year running, Catherine Wambui will grace the NCBA Golf Series Grand Finale after emerging as the Overall Gross Lady Winner to defend her title during the 15th qualifying leg of the 2025 campaign held at the Ruiru Sports Club on Saturday.
The Ruiru event was the biggest in the 2025 Series so far, bringing together 270 golfers – including five junior players- who were battling for glory and the chance to play at the grand finale set for November this year.
Kevin Metto claimed the Overall Gross Men Winner title with a score of 76 playing off handicap 2 as Wambui (handicap 7) carded 82 gross to emerge the overall winner among the ladies.
Speaking after her triumph, Wambui expressed her delight at emerging as the best lady and set her sights on the grand finale.
“I played better than last year and I am happy to have defended the title. I am looking forward to representing the Ruiru Sports Club at the grand finale later this year,” she said.
Johnson Ngugi carded an impressive 41 points to emerge as Division One winner. In Division Two, James Wangombe emerged as the winner with 46 points as Pauline Mungai won the ladies’ title after scoring 41 points.
Margaret Kariuki was the overall Division Three Winner with 41 points as Wilson Mwangi triumphed in the Junior category with 41 points as well. Jaques Venter and Jacob Ochieng won the guest and staff categories in that order after clinching 40 and 36 points respectively.
Special awards for longest drives and nearest to the pin went to C Andrea, Grace Wanjiku, Johnson Ngugi, and Alice Abere respectively.
On his part, NCBA Group Managing Director John Gachora highlighted the series’ growth since inception: “In 2021, recognizing that golf is the eighth most popular sport globally and that Kenya boasts the second largest number of golf courses in Africa, we saw a unique opportunity. We believed Kenya should be a premier golfing destination. That’s why we made the strategic decision to sponsor a golf series.
This year, every course in Kenya will feel the presence of NCBA whether through qualifiers such as this, club nites, or mugs. That is a commitment we have made this year.”
After a busy schedule with back to back qualifiers, including a regional doubleheader last week, action now heads to Kisii next weekend for the Kisii Golf Club Monthly Mug.
