The Nairobi City County government Chief Officer for Environment Geoffrey Mosiria has issued a seven day ultimatum to a resident of Thome estate who is accused of rearing livestock which cause air pollution in the residential neighborhood.
Mosiria who went on an inspection tour to the homestead within Roysambu sub county while acting on the complaints of residents about the foul smell emanating from the pig stay in the homestead warned the resident to address air pollution caused by his animals, including pigs, chickens, dogs, and other livestock within seven days or face legal action.
Mosiria was accompanied to Thome by county government officers among them the Roysambu sub county environment officer and the county government agricultural officer to ascertain the validity of the situation as raised in complaints from over 10 residents .
The air pollution according to the residents has reportedly caused discomfort and sleepless nights for neighbors over the past five years while efforts to reach out the the owners of the home are always futile as the gates remain closed.
“We have received complaints from neighbours that there is stench from pigs and other animals in this home. The neighbors cannot open their windows because of the smell and the flies and today we have come to check the situation because we have received calls from over 10 residents,” Mosiria said.
“We have given a 10 day notice for the owner to address this air pollution because the neighbors need to have a clean environment.  Failure to comply within the given timeframe will result in the arrest of the animal owner, who will face legal action in court for environmental pollution and violation of animal rights by keeping the animals in a dirty and unsuitable environment,” Mosiria announced.
In the homestead, pigs and chicken have been reared in deplorable condition making the compound a haven of houseflies and a strong foul smell emanating from the homestead to the detriment of the neighbors who continue to suffer air pollution.
