The Nairobi City county chief officer for Youth, Talents, and Sports Oscar Igaida says that Nairobi County is undergoing a significant sports infrastructure transformation, with multiple basketball courts and stadiums under construction across various neighborhoods.
Speaking at a live talk show on Citizen TV, Igaida affirmed that the construction of various sports facilities in Nairobi are well on course in an initiative spearheaded by Governor Johnson Sakaja’s administration with an aim to enhance youth sports development and reduce congestion at existing facilities.
Igaida confirmed that three new basketball courts are being built in Jericho, Umoja, and Kayole in collaboration with beverage company Hennessy which already developed a new basketball court in in Makadara.
“We are constructing three basketball courts in Jericho, Umoja, and Kayole in partnership with Hennessy,” Igaida stated.
Beyond basketball, Nairobi is also witnessing the development of several community stadiums. Over the next three years, small stadiums will be established in California, Mbotela, and the Uhuru Sports Complex, with another planned for Nairobi West. These projects align with Governor Sakaja’s vision of providing accessible sports facilities across the city.
Additionally, several major stadiums are set for completion within the year.
“Joe Kadenge Stadium will be ready by the end of this year. We will install the astro turf within the next three weeks, followed by terrace expansion and other amenities,” Igaida revealed.
Woodley Stadium is also progressing, with ground leveling currently underway.
“Before the year ends, it will be ready. Both stadiums will help ease the pressure currently on Dandora Stadium,” he added.
Governor Sakaja has further committed to upgrading Woodley, Joe Kadenge, Kihumbuini, Mwiki, and Githurai stadiums by year-end.
The county government prides in the competition of Dandora stadium which has become a major facility being used by Football Kenya Federation premier league teams as other national stadiums remain  closed for renovations.
