Newly promoted Kenyan Premier league side Nairobi United has set a crunch Mozzart Bet Cup final date with 21 times league champions Gor Mahia after edging out rivals Mara Sugar in a hotly contested semi final played at Dandora Stadium, Sunday June 1, 2025.

Naibois, as the National Super League champions are fondly known saw off stiff competition from Mara Sugar, playing to a goalless first half before both teams scored a piece each in the second half to settle on a 1-1 full time draw.

In the ensuing penalty shoot out, Nairobi United converted three spot kicks against Mara Sugar who only found the back of the net once for a 3-1 final score to set the stage for a grueling final against Gor Mahia.

Michael Karamot had put the city boys ahead early in the second half before the sugarcane farmers equalised forcing the match to be decided by penalties as the final beconed.

Nairobi United has had a fine run this season, dominating the National Super League at which they earned their first ever promotion to the top flight with three matches left to play.

The team, which is supported by the Sakaja Johnson Foundation and the Nairobi City County government has promised to snatch the trophy from favourites Gor Mahia as head coach Nicholas Muyoti exuded confidence that the boys are ready for the big stage.

“This has been a fantastic season. We got good support from the Governor of Nairobi Johnson Sakaja through the Sakaja Johnson Foundation and we are glad that we are in the premier league and now, we are one match away from winning the Mozzartbet cup. We shall face this game against Gor Mahia with determination and I can assure you that we are in it to win it,” Muyoti said.

Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja praised the team for reaching the finals promising that the foundation will keep supporting the team to develop their talents even beyond Kenya’s boarders.

“Congratulations Naibois for reaching the Mozzartbet cup final. By beating KPL side Mara Sugar, you have proven that you are equal to the task against the big boys and the final against Gor Mahia will be another moment to celebrate our wins together,” Governor Sakaja said.

For Mahia, in their first semi final triumphed over Muranga Seals in a similar penalty shootout last weekend after the match had ended in a 2-2 draw at the same venue.
