The National Olympics Committee of Kenya (NOCK) has engaged the high gear in the efforts to build a foundation for Team Kenya ahead of the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles, USA.
Kenya is the most successful African Country at the Olympics, with Kenyan athletes having won 124 medals in total, all from boxing and track and field events.
According to the NOCK President Shadrack Maluki, while the Olympic Games are won on the field, the foundation for victory and success is built long before the competition begins.
Maluki joined the NOCK Resource Mobilisation Team in Eugene, Oregon, for engagements focused on strengthening the training and support opportunities available to our athletes.
He noted that as NOCK continues with preparations for Los Angeles 2028, the team visited the Texas A&M showhouse. “These engagements are about more than identifying facilities. They are about building relationships, opening doors and mobilising the resources that can give our athletes access to the best possible preparation as they pursue Olympic qualification and excellence,” President Maluki said.
“We visited the Texas A&M showhouse and had the opportunity to hear from two distinguished figures in athletics, Kenya’s 1988 Olympic 800m champion and assistant coach, Paul Ereng, and legendary American sprinter and coach, Leroy Burrell,” President Maluki added.
Kenya’s Olympic achievements are overwhelmingly concentrated in track and field events, particularly in middle- and long-distance running, where it has established itself as a global powerhouse. Kenyan runners have consistently dominated events ranging from the 800 metres to the marathon.
“Kenya has immense talent. Our responsibility is to ensure that talent is matched with the environment, expertise and resources required to compete at the highest level. LA 2028 is two years away. Our work cannot wait. We are laying the groundwork now for the Team Kenya we want to see in Los Angeles. The journey to LA 2028 starts today,” He said.
Following the engagements in Los Angeles, NOCK is now strengthening the wider performance and resource mobilisation strategy for Team Kenya ahead of the 2028 Olympic Games they have already established a resource mobilisation team in Atlanta, Georgia, creating a base to engage partners, the Kenyan diaspora and other stakeholders in support of Team Kenya.
Kenya made its debut at the 1956 Summer Olympics in Melbourne and has since become one of the most prominent nations among the Olympic athletics. The country has also won several medals in boxing, particularly in the 1960s through the 1980s, although recent decades have seen a decline in that sport’s contribution to Kenya’s medal tally which Maluki has vowed to help restore and develop.
