The ruling Kenya Kwanza coalition partner the Amani National Congress (ANC) has officially approved its merger with the President William Ruto led  United Democratic Alliance party (UDA).

The decision was made during a meeting of the Amani Council and elected leaders of the ANC party held in Lamu on August 3, 2024.

“ANC party organs have agreed and resolved to approve the proposed merger between ANC and UDA” read a statement by ANC.

The meeting, hosted by Lamu Governor and ANC party leader Issa Timamy, brought together over 140 members of the Amani Council, along with Members of Parliament and Members of County Assemblies affiliated with the party.

Timamy expressed confidence in the merger, assuring members of both ANC and UDA that the union would drive the country toward much-needed stability and progress.

The Lamu governor took over the leadership reigns of the ANC party from Musalia Mudavadi who resigned upon appointment as Prime Cabinet Secretary.

During the Lamu meeting, key resolutions were made in line with the ANC party’s constitution, culminating in the formal approval of the merger with UDA.

In the gathering,  governor Timamy was authorised to lead, coordinate, and oversee the full implementation of the merger

“Timamy, the Party Leader, has been authorized and granted the mandate to lead, coordinate and oversee the full implementation and completion of the merger between ANC and UDA, time being of the essence,” it read,

The Amani Council unanimously agreed support for President William Ruto and the Kenya Kwanza administration, emphasising the party’s alignment with the government’s agenda.

The ANC leadership stressed the importance of shunning tribal politics and called for a united Kenya.

“The leadership emphasised that overcoming ethnic divisions remains a national priority to enable a conducive environment for social, political and economic stability and progress for our nation,” the council said.

On Sunday, ANC held a crucial pre-merger meeting where party leaders unanimously agreed to merge with the UDA.

The meeting was marked by a strong sense of unity and purpose, with leaders outlining the path forward for the merger.
