In a groundbreaking moment for Kenyan football, Jackline Juma has been appointed as the head coach of FC Talanta, making her the first woman in the nation to lead a men’s team in the FKF Premier League. The upcoming 2024/2025 season, set to kick off on August 24th, 2024, will see Coach Juma, fondly known as Jacky, at the helm of one of Kenya’s top football clubs.

Expressing her excitement and determination, Coach Jacky remarked, “This is an incredible honor and a proud moment not just for me, but for women in football across Kenya and Africa. This milestone is a testament to the progress we’ve made in promoting inclusivity in football. I’m thrilled to bring my experience and passion to FC Talanta and am fully prepared to tackle this new challenge.”

Jacky’s appointment is a significant step forward for gender equality in sports, demonstrating that women are equally capable of leading at the highest levels of football. She encouraged other female coaches to pursue their dreams and take up coaching courses, emphasizing that her appointment is a testament to the abilities and potential of women in football.

“Gender should never be a barrier. My journey to this role shows that with hard work and determination, women can excel in any field, including football. I urge more women to pursue coaching courses and challenge the status quo,” she added.

A trailblazer in her own right, Jackline Juma, alongside Harambee Starlets coach Beldine Odemba, is one of the first women in Kenya to earn a CAF A coaching license. Her extensive coaching career includes stints with Gor Mahia Queens and the Talanta Hela Under-19 national team, where she honed her skills and built a reputation as a strategic and inspirational leader.

Reflecting on her journey, Coach Jacky expressed her gratitude to the Football Kenya Federation (FKF) for its role in promoting gender equality in football. “FKF has given both men and women the opportunity to access knowledge and grow in their careers. My focus at FC Talanta will be on building a strong team culture, fostering discipline, and implementing tactical strategies that will bring out the best in the players. I’m eager to help the team achieve its goals and set new benchmarks for success.”

Jacky’s appointment is a powerful statement about the future of football in Kenya, signaling that inclusivity and equal opportunity are now more than just ideals—they are realities. “My employer, FC Talanta, and FKF have shown their commitment to inclusivity by creating opportunities for women in various roles. I hope this inspires more women to pursue football careers, knowing that they will be supported and recognized for their talents,” she said.

As she steps into this historic role, Jackline Juma is not just focused on the present; she is also looking to the future. She is committed to mentoring the next generation of female coaches, ensuring they have the same opportunities and support that she has received. “I want my journey to show the world that women can achieve anything in football with the right support. FKF has laid a strong foundation, and I’m dedicated to building on that by mentoring young female coaches.”

In her closing remarks, Coach Jacky inspired aspiring young female footballers and coaches across the country. “To all the young girls out there, your dreams are valid. You can achieve anything with determination, hard work, and the right support. FKF has shown that they believe in us, and I’m here to show that we belong at every level of football. Keep pushing, keep believing, and the sky’s the limit.”

As the 2024/2025 season approaches, all eyes will be on Coach Jacky and FC Talanta, as they embark on what promises to be an exciting and groundbreaking journey in Kenyan football.
