Champions Githurai roar to Sakaja Super cup semis in thrilling win over Kiambiu Warriors

The Sakaja Super Cup defending champions Githurai All Stars booked a semi final slot in the ongoing second edition of the tournament after sealing a laboured 2-0 victory over resilient Kiambiu Warriors in a quarter final played Monday at Dandora Stadium.

Talisman Erick Kuria slotted in from close range out of a sublime cross from Hassan Masudi down the left flank in the 27th minute of the game as the 2023 champions held on the the lead into the halftime break.

Past paced winger Danson Mariga added the tally with calm strike from inside the box in the 32nd minute throwing the packed stadium into frenzy as the 2023 champions made clear their intentions to retain the title.

It was a match won out of experience and confidence as the Kiambiu Warriors seemed to change the tempo of the game in the second half twice squandering clear cut chances at goal but Githurai held their act together to hold onto the lead.

In the first quarter final match of he day, home side Baghdad FC from Dandora, clearly the better side were unlucky as they bowed out at the hands of neighbors Lucky Summer Sports after their barren draw was forced into penalties won 5-4 by Lucky Summer.

Darwin Otieno’s first spot kick made the difference as he hit the ball straight against Lucky Summer custodian while all other penalties were converted with ease.

In the ladies chapter region quarter finals played earlier, 2023 ladies champions Club Jojo were bundled out of the 2024 edition of the tournament.

Club Jojo playing their title defense against Soweto Starlets were forced to settle to a goalless draw before losing 3- 4 in the ensuing penalty shootout.

The hero of the match was Soweto goalkeeper who was introduced in the second half after an eligibility row on the first choice keeper. The subbed keeper would go on to save two spot kicks and seal Soweto Starlets victory.

In Nairobi West regions, 2023 runners up Kibagare Girls sealed a comfortable2-0 victory over slum scorers to move into the semi finals.

In other marches of the Sakaja Super Cup ladies chapter played at Tom Mboya grounds, Kahawa Pride beat Kamongo Starlets 3-1 on penalties after a 1-1 draw. Tabitha Wambui opened opened the scoreline in the 15th minute for Kahawa pride before Miriam Zeriah leveled for Kamongo starlets in the 25th minute as both teams held on to force the match to penalties.

Halisi Soccer defeated 34C Allstars by a solitary goal courtesy of Jacinta Atieno who found the net in the 18th minute while Shrink Pack Starlets picked a 1- 0 victory over Kariobangi Sharks ladies a thanks to a 14th minute strike from Sharon Chepkemoi.

Makadara MP Aspirant Edwin Kuria launches Nairobi Mega Pool tournament Makadara Constituency incoming Member of Parliament Edwin Kuria has today, Saturday 9 May, 2026, launched Nairobi’s mega Pool Table Tournament, slated for May 24th, 2026 with a promise to deliver an ecentric pool table tournament where a lucky, talented youth will win a brand new Motor Cycle. Speaking today in Viwandani Ward of Makadara Sub County, Kuria activated the youth to brace themselves for an electrifying competition in the tournament meant to empower the youth. Kuria noted that the ground has changed, and so have the people, making a shift upon which, today’s generation is no longer waiting on promises but they are stepping forward to claim opportunity through action, talent, and unity. “Leadership today must create platforms that empower, engage, and uplift the community in real and visible ways,” Kuria said. The tournament will be held at STAR OF HOPE, starting from 10:00 AM, bringing together players and fans for a day of skill, connection, and opportunity. Participants will compete for exciting rewards, with the GRAND PRIZE BEING A MOTORBIKE, alongside other cash prizes of KSH 40,000, KSH 20,000, and KSH 10,000. This mega tournament will be played across five zones where the winner in every zone will pocket Ksh. 5000 and a chance to move into the next stage for an opportunity to win a Motor Cycle. The runners up in every zone will walk away with a Ksh. 3000 while number three wins Ksh. 2000. In that spirit, Kuria has taken it upon himself to bring the community together through the VIWANDANI POOL TOURNAMENT, set for 24TH MAY 2026. Kiria intones that this is not just competition, it is a statement of inclusion, youth empowerment, and practical engagement at the grassroots level. Kuria encouraged all interested participants to register with thekir local cordinators and be part of this transformative experience. “This is what meaningful leadership looks like—creating real opportunities where talent is recognized and rewarded. It is about moving beyond words and ensuring that progress can be seen and felt within the community,” Kuria said. Kuria, who is running for the position of Makadara Membernof Parliament has been active in empowering the residents of Makadara constituency using sports as a way of empowerment.
