Former Constitutional Affairs Minister Martha Karua has rebranded political outfit Narc Kenya transforming it to the People’s Liberation Party (PLP) on Thursday, February 26th, 2025.
Karua, a veteran human rights advocate and opposition leader, who was the 2022 general elections Azimio coalition presidential candidate Raila Odinga’s running mate said the rebranding aims to resonate with Kenya’s Gen Z voters, who have become a formidable political force, particularly following the 2024 anti-tax protests that pressured President William Ruto to withdraw a controversial budget bill.
“Young Kenyans have demonstrated that they will not be ignored. Our mission is to unite and liberate,” Karua stated, referencing the party’s newly adopted slogan, Unite and Liberate.
The party has also introduced a purple rose symbol, mirroring red petals in symbol of Narc Kenya.
PLP has new colors including purple, lilac, and white, moving away from red, white, and green of the NARC-Kenya party.
In addition to the new name, the party’s slogan will henceforth be “Unite” and “Liberate,” replacing the old one, “One Kenya, One Nation, One People.”
The party’s symbol has also changed from a red rose to a purple rose.
According to Karua, the change in the colour of the petals does not signify a shift away from the party’s original mission, which was established in 2006.
Karua is hoping to capitlise Gen Z voters’ rejection traditional tribal-based politics, instead advocating for accountability and governance reforms.
PLP hopes to harness this momentum, positioning itself as a party that champions change and empowerment.
Thursday’s unveiling drew prominent opposition leaders, including the immediate former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua and Wiper Party’s Kalonzo Musyoka, ex-Defence Minister Eugene Wamalawa, Kisii Senator Richard Onyonka elected on an ODM ticket representing the Jubilee Party presidential candidate Dr Fred Matiang’i further signaling a possible realignment of Kenya’s opposition forces ahead of the next general election.
According to Karua, the change in the colour of the petals does not signify a shift away from the party’s original mission, which was established in 2006.
The one-time Presidential candidate in 2013 explained that the broader strategy of PLP aims to resonate more with the Generation Z demographic, who are expected to play a pivotal role in the 2027 General Election.
The rebrand comes after Eugene Wamalwa opened the new Democratic Action Party of Kenya (DAP-K) headquarters in a ceremony which was also attend by former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua
It also comes as impeached Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has been on the lookout putting together a coalition of the willing, which so far has involved former Vice President (VP) and Wiper Leader Kalonzo Musyoka, Eugene Wamalwa (DAP-Kenya), former ruling party Jubilee and Karua, signaling their willingness to work together.
