Human rights activist Boniface Mwangi has declared June 25 a public holiday to mark the Gen Z revolution

He called on Kenyans to stay home, skip work or school, and honour young protesters who died or were affected during the demonstrations. Speaking on Friday, June 13, 2025, Mwangi made a passionate call for justice.

“Lazima wale waliua vijana wetu washikwe, washtakiwe na wafungwe,” he said.

Translated: “Those who killed our young people must be arrested, charged, and jailed.”

He added that families who lost loved ones must be compensated, and even those who lost property during the protests should be paid. He also called for legal action against anyone who looted during the chaos.

Mwangi stressed that the young people who lost their lives were more than just victims; they were martyrs. He criticised the government for failing to honour them with national prayers or recognition, instead pushing a message of “accept and move on”.

“We have refused,” he declared. “Tell our Kenyans, on June 25th, we’re going to the Parliament. The reasons why our children died… have not been clarified.”

“They cannot have died for nothing or in vain. That’s why we must go back to Parliament — to complete what we started.”

Gen Z’s liberation day

Earlier, opposition leaders Rigathi Gachagua and Kalonzo Musyoka also declared June 25 a symbolic public holiday, urging Kenyans to stay away from work in a show of national solidarity.

“June 25 will be a liberation day to commemorate the sacrifice of our Gen Zs who sought to liberate this country,” Kalonzo said during a rally in Voi, Taita Taveta County.

The leaders called for the day to be marked as Gen Z Liberation Day, remembering those who were killed during the June 25, 2024, protests against the controversial Finance Bill.

Although opposition leaders cannot legally declare a public holiday, a role reserved for Interior CS Kipchumba Murkomen, their calls are expected to cause widespread disruption in major towns across Kenya.
