CAF sanctions Kenya over Chan security breaches

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has imposed a KSh 2.5 million fine on the Football Kenya Federation (FKF) following multiple security breaches during the CHAN 2024 opening match between Kenya and DR Congo at Kasarani Stadium on Sunday.

 

According to the CAF Security Officer’s official report, several incidents were noted with a highlighted security breach occurring in restricted areas designated forPublic Security Areas.

 

CAF noted that there was stampede at the entry gate 11 while a motorbike was seen dangerously maneuvering through the crowd.

 

CAF laments that tye Kenyan fans ignited fires inside the stadium, specifically behind the stands at block 18 and CAF staff and protocol officers were denied access to the VVIP area by State Security, including a member of the South African President’s Close Protection Unit.

 

A Falcon Private Security guard allegedly assaulted a CAF commercial staff member and a sponsor representative.

 

Further, CAF has threatened to sanction Football Kenya Federation for numerous security lapses during the first match.

 

Under the sanctions, Kenya risks facing more consequences as the country might be forced to play behind closed doors.

 

CAF slapped FKF with the hefty KSh 2.5 million fine over the shocking security failures during the CHAN2024 opener between Kenya and DR Congo that was played on Sunday at Kasarani Stadium.

 

CAF has reiterated that the association will not compromise on the tournament safety and standards. Kenya must now clean up its act on the international stage.

 

FKF in its reaction reaffirmed their commitment to delivering CHAN 2024 as a safe, inclusive, and dignified tournament.

 

FKF has noted that the federation is committed to comply fully with stadium security procedures and the CAF Code of conduct.
