The National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC) has been called upon to investigate the conduct of Jomvu Member of Parliament Twalib Badi following claims that he has been threatening people from non-indigenous communities living in Mombasa with forceful eviction.
The damming claims arose after the MP was accused of attempting to grab a parcel of land in Chuda, land that belongs to a Mombasa businesswoman, claiming that she is among the people from outside Mombasa, commonly referred to as “Wabara,” meaning people from outside the coastal region.
In several videos which went viral on social media, the woman narrates how an incident which started on 24/6/2024 ended up with the MP forcefully building a hotel outside the woman’s business premises following a protracted tussle which ended with MP Badi telling the woman that he has the power to evict her since she is from the non indegenious communities at the coast.
The lady who received overwhelming support from the locals in the area finally got a reprieve after obtaining a court order to halt the construction before Mombasa County Assembly speaker Ibrahim Aroro and Tudor Member of the County Assembly (MCA) Samir Balo stepped in and had the structure demolished by the Mombasa County government.
The local people in the area have now called on NCIC to step in and investigate the claims, as they condemn the MP for the claims, noting that the MP is not fit to hold public office and should not be elected to parliament again.
MP Badi is said to be unleashing goons on innocent residents and has gone rogue with his utterances, which threatened to evict perceived non-indigenous people from the cosmopolitan coastal county of Mombasa.
Insinuating that Badi has the power to cause the eviction of “Wabara” from Mombasa and denying them an opportunity to do their business is enough grounds to provide sufficient evidence that Badi has a plan to support ethnic cleansing in the county.
According to the businesswoman, trouble began when unknown people went to her plot and started construction, which she vehemently opposed. Later, a rogue county roads surveyor came to demarcate the plot before the woman contracted the services of another surveyor, who advised her to fence off her plot to deter land grabbers.
The MP later visited the area when the woman explained her concerns with the hope of getting help from the legislator, only to learn that the MP was at the centre of the saga and was determined to steal the land from her possession.
The Constitution of Kenya mandates the National Cohesion and Integration Commission to, among other things, facilitate and promote equal opportunities, good relations, harmony, and peaceful coexistence among persons of different ethnic and racial communities, and advise the Government on all matters thereof.
It also has a function to eliminate all forms of ethnic or racial discrimination and discourage persons, institutions, political parties, and associations from advocating or promoting discrimination.
Enhance tolerance, understanding, and acceptance of diversity in all aspects of national life.
Promote respect for religious, cultural, and linguistic diversity in a plural society.
NCIC investigates complaints of discrimination and makes recommendations to the Attorney General, Human Rights Commission, or other authority on remedial measures to be taken where such complaints are valid.
