James Njoroge Ndung’u – a businessman and the son of a prominent politician – has always lived at the crossroads of influence and danger. In his world, it’s expected that power attracts both loyal friends and formidable enemies. But for James, the balance tipped far beyond the ordinary.

In June last year, he did the unthinkable: he managed to anger two of Kenya’s most unpredictable and volatile forces – the rebellious Gen-Z movement and the dreaded Mungiki group. The Gen-Z protesters, who had shaken the nation through property destruction, assaults on politicians, and nationwide unrest, had already forced President Ruto into late-night crisis meetings and the drafting of new laws to contain them. Crossing them alone would have been perilous. But James somehow drew the ire of both them and the Mungiki simultaneously – a combination few could survive unscathed.
Rumors from his neighbors suggest that whatever happened went far beyond politics or the controversial 2024 Finance Bill. “We’ve never seen Mungiki pursue anyone with such determination and fury,” one neighbor said. The reasons remain murky – whispers of class wars, jealousy, and the ever-present Hustler vs. Dynasty divide swirl around his name. Others say envy played a role – resentment toward a young man born into privilege, who nonetheless built his own success and rose to live a life of affluence.

Whatever sparked the fury, the aftermath was swift and brutal. Within hours, James was forced out of his workplace. His father’s supermarket was torched, his bakery destroyed, and several other family businesses reduced to rubble – wiping out livelihoods and leaving hundreds jobless. They killed his former wife after being mistaken for him – a chilling twist that drove both him and his wife Natasha Ngina Magugu into permanent hiding. It makes you wonder: how much would anyone have to be paid to trade places with James?
Ninety days later, in an interview with the Nation Media Group, his father reflected on the tragedy with haunting words: “I woke up a rich man and slept a pauper.”
The Gen-Z storm has since quieted, but its embers still smolder – a restless force, waiting for the next spark to reclaim the streets. For Mr. James, the scars of that uprising remain a stark reminder of what happens when power, politics, and defiance collide.
They forced him out of both his workplace and his home. His father’s supermarket was torched, his bakery reduced to ashes, and several other family businesses destroyed. Worst of all, his former wife was killed – mistaken for him in a chilling act of vengeance.
But according to word on the street, it’s far from over. One of his former neighbors said the people hunting him had been looking for him relentlessly, quoting them as saying, “Kama alihepa, akwende kabisa… asirudi hapa!” – loosely translated, “If he ran away, let him never come back.”
