Nairobi Governor H.E Johnson Sakaja and Kariobangi South Member of the County Assembly (MCA) Hon. Robert ‘Mr. Good’ Mbatia will officially preside over the launch of the Uhuru Complex Sports Facility in Kariobangi South ward tomorrow, Saturday, 23rd March 2024.

The sports facility, a first of its kind in the larger Eastlands region of Nairobi, will feature multi-sports facilities to host various disciplines. It is the brainchild of MCA Hon. Mbatia, aligning with Governor Sakaja’s commitment to improving and developing new sports facilities. This initiative aims to empower the talented youth in Nairobi to leverage their sporting abilities for personal growth.

The Uhuru Complex Sports Facility, managed by the County Government of Nairobi, includes an 8×8 football pitch, a basketball court convertible for volleyball, handball, and other sports, a multi-purpose hall for indoor games like chess and boxing, a gym, and aerobics facilities. It also features a police post to ensure security.

Mbatia highlighted that the facility will also act as a sports academy providing learners with a platform to nurture their talent and potentially pursue careers in the sports industry.

“I am excited to see my idea of establishing a sports facility become a reality. This complex will play a vital role in nurturing talent, not just in my ward but across Eastlands part of the City. I thank Governor Sakaja for joining us in making this dream a reality,” said Hon. Mbatia.

“As the area MCA, I am pleased that this facility is here. Many people in Eastlands are involved in sports, and this facility will create employment opportunities for our youth and help them develop their talents, especially in Kariobangi South ward and neighboring areas,” he added.

“Governor Sakaja as a nominated M.P in 2013 toured the area and pledged to support the Uhuru Sports Complex.  10 years later,  the dream promise is now a reality with Sakaja having taken over as Nairobi Governor”

Governor Sakaja, dedicated to fulfilling his promise of developing sports and nurturing talent, has overseen various sports facility projects since taking office. The Uhuru Complex adds to these initiatives, including the ongoing construction of Joe Kadenge Stadium (formerly City Stadium) and Woodly Stadium, the completion of Dandora Stadium, and the construction of a basketball court at Camp Toyoyo, among others.

Sakaja reiterated his commitment to sports development, ensuring that sports facilities are upgraded across Nairobi, including upcoming Riruta Grounds, Mwiki Grounds, and others to be constructed by the county government.

“When I was elected, I promised the people of Nairobi that we would improve sports facilities. We are reviving stalled projects and constructing new facilities to provide the services our people deserve,” Governor Sakaja emphasized.

The launch of the Uhuru Complex Sports Facility marks a significant step towards enhancing sports infrastructure and nurturing talent in Nairobi.
