Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja has said plans are on course to expand the annual Sakaja Super Cup football tournament this year in its third edition by including rugby and boxing.
Speaking during a live morning tall show on Radio 47 FM, Sakaja said the football tournament, which is the richest grassroots football tournament in Nairobi has proved to be a game changer in the transformation of youths and grassroots teams and this year, the tournament will be expanded to include more sports with rugby and boxing earmarked as the first new signings into the Sakaja Super Cup fold.
Sakaja noted that the football tournament has quickly grown into a house hold name and along the way uplifted lives of many talented youths who have had the opportunity to explore new frontiers rising from their talent and time is ripe for this to be extended to other sports disciplines.
“The Sakaja Super Cup started in 2023 with 340 men teams and 34 ladies teams and this number doubled to 780 men’s teams in 2024 teams. Githurai All Stars have won in both editions with the winner getting Ksh 3 million and this we have seen transforming our youths. You can see and fee the passion in sports that is why this year we want to expand to other sports disciplines,” Sakaja said.
Notably, the Nairobi city county boxing team was second in the Boxing Federation of Kenya league in 2024 behind Kenya defense forces and the team went to Kampala for the regional competition all sponsored by the county government. Now this tournament, which by the way is organised by Football Kenya Federation and the Sakaja Foundation will be bigger and better this year bringing more sports onboard,” he added.
The Sakaja Super Cup is a tournament that is played from October to December and only involves players who have not featured at the national team, the FKF Premier league, the second tier National Super League or the National Division one leagues offering a chance to grassroots players to shine and get a chance to have their talent scouted.
