Nairobi United is marking a decade since its formation in style after clinching the Football Kenya Federation (FKF) National Super League (NSL) to earn promotion into the top tier FKF Premier League and now aiming to crown the eventful season with the Mozzart Bet FKF Cup.

The team which won the second tier league with two matches to spare, thrashed fellow NSL side Mara Sugar 3-1 to book a date with record 21 times Premier league champions Gor Mahia on Sunday, June 29th, 2025 at Ulinzi Sports Complex in Nairobi.

As they prepare for the final, the newly crowned FKF National Super League champions will be eyeing a historic double. A win would not only crown their dream season but also hand them a ticket to represent Kenya in the CAF Confederation Cup, emulating Mathare United, who in 1998 won the Moi Golden Cup as a second-tier team and earned promotion to the top tier in the same season.

Nairobi United have been the fairytale story of this year’s competition. In a season to remember, the second-tier side have not only secured promotion to the FKF Premier League but also stormed into the final of the Mozzart Bet Cup knocking out four top-tier clubs in the process.

The team have been on a steady rise to the creme-de-la-creme of Kenyan football, having been formed in 2015 as Balaji EPZ Football Club.

Its name was changed to Nairobi United FC in 2022, four years after they had clinched the Nairobi Regional title.

In September last year, Nairobi governor Johnson Sakaja — through his Sakaja Foundation — acquired the club with the promise to invest considerably in player development, infrastructure and recruitment.

This journey, is fueled by the Johnson Sakaja Foundation’s investment and strategic planning, is seen by some as a triumph of ambition and a testament to their innovative approach to player development.

Their FKF Mozzart Bet Cup, journey began in the round of 64 with a 3-1 win over Global Connection, before entering a giant-killing run. They eliminated Tusker FC in the round of 32, holding the brewers to a 1-1 draw before winning 5-4 in a penalty shootout. In the round of 16, they repeated the feat, edging KCB 6-5 on penalties after a goalless draw.

The quarterfinals saw Naibois dominate former cup winners Kakamega Homeboyz with a commanding 2-0 win. In the semifinals, they faced a resilient Mara Sugar side, drawing 1-1 in regular time before triumphing 3-1 in yet another penalty shootout.
